Mahmudur Rahman Manna, the President of Nagorik Oikya and a veteran figure in the Bangladeshi political landscape, has been admitted to hospital following a severe cardiac arrest. The incident occurred late on Saturday night, leading to his emergency hospitalisation at the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) in Dhaka.
His personal physician, Dr Shoaib Muhammad, confirmed the diagnosis of a heart attack, stating that the political leader is currently undergoing intensive monitoring.
A Legacy of Medical Complications
The news of Mr Manna’s illness has reignited discussions regarding his treatment during his previous incarceration. A press statement released by Sakib Anwar, the Organising Secretary of Nagorik Oikya, provided a grim retrospective on the leader’s health struggles.
In 2015, following his arrest, Mr Manna suffered his first heart attack while in custody. Despite medical examinations at the time revealing multiple coronary blocks, it is alleged that the then-government denied him adequate surgical intervention, returning him to prison prematurely. Furthermore, the party claims that the prolonged confiscation of his passport after his release prevented him from accessing the specialist cardiac care required to address his pre-existing blocks.
Critical 36-Hour Observation Period
As of Sunday morning, Mr Manna remains in the Coronary Care Unit (CCU). A high-level medical board has been convened by the BSMMU authorities to assess the extent of the damage and decide on a treatment plan, which may include emergency stenting or bypass surgery.
Sakib Anwar briefed the media at 11:00 am, noting that the patient’s condition remains precarious. “The medical board is meeting to evaluate his status,” he said. “The doctors have made it clear that he will not be considered out of danger until at least 36 hours have passed under observation.”
