Major Arrests in Dhaka Military Operation Seize Arms and Drugs

In a high-profile military operation in Mohammadpur, Dhaka, authorities have apprehended five individuals, including Shawon (23), the prime suspect in a long-standing murder case. The operation, conducted in the Chand Udyan and Shona Miaer Tek areas, also led to the seizure of a substantial cache of weapons, explosives, and illegal drugs.

The Army confirmed that the primary objective of the raid, which extended until 2:30 a.m. on Wednesday, 4 February, was to identify and capture Shawon. Intelligence received from the Basila Army Camp indicated that Shawon had been hiding in the locality for an extended period. His notoriety grew after a video of last year’s murder circulated widely on social media, showing him stabbing a victim to death in broad daylight.

Acting on this confidential information, the military team swiftly moved to the scene and successfully apprehended Shawon. During the operation, four of his associates were also detained. They have been identified as Anwar (25), Shakil (23), Shuvo (20), and Belal (36).

Local residents expressed relief following the operation, commending the Army’s efforts. “Shawon’s gang had been terrorising the area for years with various criminal activities. His arrest has restored a sense of security in the community,” they said.

A senior officer from the 46th Infantry Brigade stated, “Shawon committed a murder in broad daylight last year. Using CCTV evidence, we were able to identify him. Previous attempts to capture him were unsuccessful, but last night’s operation, executed according to a precise plan, led to his arrest along with a significant amount of weapons.”

All five detainees have been handed over to Mohammadpur Police Station to face subsequent legal proceedings. Authorities emphasised that investigations are ongoing and further arrests could follow as more intelligence is processed.
