Ancelotti Weighs Neymar Decision

Carlo Ancelotti will announce Brazil’s final World Cup squad next Monday, with the future of Neymar dominating discussion across the country ahead of the tournament.

The 34-year-old forward remains Brazil’s all-time leading scorer, but uncertainty continues over whether he will be included in the squad for the World Cup, which begins on 11 June. Neymar has struggled with injuries over an extended period and has not consistently produced his best form since returning to Brazilian club Santos FC.

Ancelotti is currently finalising the squad for the five-time world champions, balancing Neymar’s experience and influence against the physical demands of modern international football. Speaking to Reuters on Tuesday, the Brazil coach said several factors must be considered before making a final decision.

“He is clearly a very important player for this country because of the talent he has shown,” Ancelotti said. “But he has experienced several problems and is working hard to return. Recently, his performances have improved and he has been playing regularly. Even so, the decision is not easy for me. We need to assess the positives and negatives very carefully.”

The interview took place at the headquarters of the Brazilian Football Confederation in Barra da Tijuca, Rio de Janeiro. Ancelotti, regarded as one of the most successful coaches in football history, addressed the issue in measured terms.

The Italian remains the only coach to have won league titles in all five major European leagues. He has also won the UEFA Champions League twice as a player and a record five times as a coach.

Neymar’s Influence Inside the Squad

Despite concerns over his fitness, Neymar continues to enjoy strong support within the Brazil dressing room. Several teammates have publicly backed his inclusion in the World Cup squad, while supporters remain divided over whether his physical condition can still match his technical ability.

Ancelotti acknowledged Neymar’s popularity both among supporters and within the squad.

“I know very well how popular Neymar is,” he said. “Not only among the public, but also among his teammates.”

He added that Neymar’s presence would not create problems inside the dressing room.

“He is loved by everyone. Bringing him into the squad would not negatively affect the atmosphere,” Ancelotti explained.

The Brazil coach also stressed that player opinions would not determine the final selection.

“It is normal for players to express their opinions,” he said. “I appreciate everyone who gives me advice, but ultimately I am the person responsible for making the decision.”

Fitness Remains Central Concern

Ancelotti indicated that his tactical approach requires forwards capable of pressing, tracking back defensively and maintaining a high work rate throughout matches. That requirement has increased scrutiny over Neymar’s physical condition after his recent injury struggles.

However, the coach said the forward’s fitness has shown signs of improvement in recent matches.

“In the last few games, Neymar’s fitness has improved considerably,” Ancelotti said. “He has played several good matches and has been able to maintain high intensity. But every match is different.”

He also confirmed that no external pressure had been applied regarding Neymar’s inclusion.

“No one has pressured me to include Neymar,” Ancelotti said. “I have complete freedom. I will make the decision from a fully professional perspective. Only his football performances will be considered.”
