Armed Youth Detained at Daulatpur Border Town with Pistol

Police officers have apprehended a 25-year-old man in possession of a foreign-made pistol, a magazine, and four rounds of live ammunition in the border region of Daulatpur, Kushtia. The suspect, identified as Saikat Islam, was arrested during a targeted evening raid on Friday in the Bhagjot Bazar area, located within the Ramkrishnapur Union of the upazila.

Saikat is reported to be the son of Golam Mostafa, a resident of Mahishkundi Pakuria village under the neighbouring Pragpur Union.

Acting on a confidential tip-off regarding the movement of illicit firearms near the international border, a specialised team from the Daulatpur Police Station deployed to Bhagjot Bazar. Upon arriving at the bustling marketplace, officers spotted Saikat behaving suspiciously. Law enforcement officials swiftly cordoned off the area and detained him. A subsequent body search conducted in front of local witnesses led to the discovery of the foreign firearm, the magazine, and the ammunition tucked away in his waistband. The suspect failed to produce any legal documentation or authorised permits for the weapon.

The Daulatpur border belt has historically been a highly sensitive corridor for law enforcement in western Bangladesh. Given its geographical proximity to the neighbouring country, criminal syndicates frequently attempt to exploit the region’s porous borders to smuggle contraband, narcotics, and unlicensed firearms into the mainland. Local residents have long expressed concerns over the occasional influx of illegal arms, which often fuel regional gang rivalries and criminal activities.

Arifur Rahman, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Daulatpur Police Station, confirmed the details of the operation to the press, stating that a formal case has been registered against the accused under the Arms Act. Following initial interrogation at the police station, Saikat was escorted to the local court under tight security this afternoon, where the magistrate ordered him to be remanded in custody at the Kushtia District Jail. Investigators are currently probing whether the suspect is linked to a larger arms smuggling ring operating across the border. In the meantime, police patrols have been intensified across strategic border checkpoints and local markets to deter further criminal incursions.
