A profound sense of tragedy has gripped the village of Gobardanga in Kaliganj Upazila, Jhenaidah, following reports of the brutal double homicide of a Bangladeshi expatriate entrepreneur and his female associate in Malaysia. The primary victim, Nazrul Islam, was allegedly targeted following a protracted and vitriolic commercial dispute with local business associates. His family has made the harrowing claim that after being hacked to death with sharp implements, his remains were set alight in a barbaric attempt to eradicate evidence of the crime.
The atrocity, which took place during the late hours of Tuesday, 14 April, also resulted in the death of Kohinoor Begum, a Bangladeshi national and close acquaintance who was reportedly with Nazrul at the time of the targeted attack.

A Flourishing Enterprise Met with Envy
Nazrul Islam relocated to Malaysia in 2018, driven by the ambition to secure a prosperous future for his family. Through six years of relentless industry, he transformed a modest start into a thriving agricultural concern. His enterprise was remarkably diverse, encompassing the rearing of cattle, goats, ducks, and poultry. Beyond his commercial interests, he was known for his compassion, maintaining a sanctuary on his farm for stray cats and dogs.
However, his rapid ascent in the local market appears to have fostered deep-seated resentment among his business partners. According to family testimony, Nazrul had reached a point where he felt his safety was compromised and had recently initiated the liquidation of his assets to return to Bangladesh permanently. He had already begun selling his livestock and finalising his accounts, intending to retire to his homeland. Cruelly, it was during this transition that his life was cut short.
Heart-rending Testimony from the Bereaved
The victim’s elder brother, Zahirul Islam, provided a chilling insight into the threats Nazrul had faced in the weeks leading up to his death.
“He had explicitly warned us that his relationship with his business partners had turned dangerous. He told us there had already been several attempts on his life. We implored him to abandon his assets and flee back to Jhenaidah immediately. He reassured us, saying, ‘Give me just a few more days to tie up the loose ends.’ I simply cannot fathom that my brother has been taken from us in such a savage and inhuman way.”
The psychological impact on the family is devastating. Nazrul’s niece, Sadia Islam Mim, spoke of the unfulfilled promises made during their final conversation.
“My uncle told me that he had sold the last of the farm and would be home within days. He promised to bring back wonderful gifts for me. I can still hear his voice in my head. We no longer care about the money or the farm; we only demand justice and the chance to receive his body so we can offer him a dignified burial and a final goodbye.”
Diplomatic Hurdles and the Path to Justice
The local authorities in Bangladesh have acknowledged the gravity of the crime but have highlighted the significant diplomatic and jurisdictional barriers involved. Zellal Hossain, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kaliganj Police Station, noted that while the local police are providing support to the family, the criminal investigation falls strictly under the mandate of the Malaysian police.
He emphasised that the repatriation of the deceased and any subsequent pursuit of a criminal trial will require high-level coordination between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Bangladesh High Commission in Kuala Lumpur, and the Jhenaidah district administration.
This tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the risks faced by the Bangladeshi diaspora. As the investigation into the double murder and arson continues in Malaysia, the community in Gobardanga remains in mourning, waiting for the return of a man who sought prosperity abroad but found only tragedy.
