Barcelona coach Hansi Flick has called on his side to produce a strong “reaction” against Girona in Monday’s LaLiga fixture following their humbling 4-0 defeat by Atletico Madrid in the first leg of the Copa del Rey semifinals.
The Catalan giants were outclassed at the Metropolitano Stadium on Thursday, with Diego Simeone’s side dominating possession and winning nearly every duel. Flick, however, believes that the team’s attitude has improved in the training sessions since that heavy loss.
“Atletico were ready for this fight. It was a Champions League-level game, and the first 45 minutes were not right,” Flick said on Sunday.
“We did not have the attitude to be competitive in every duel. They were more dynamic, better in one-on-one situations – and this is exactly what I want from my team.
“Today in training, I saw a positive response, and we have to bring that onto the pitch tomorrow.”
The timing of the Copa setback could not have been worse. Real Madrid secured a 2-1 victory over Real Sociedad on Saturday, extending their lead at the top of the LaLiga table to two points over the reigning champions.
Despite the disappointment, Flick remains confident that Barcelona’s quality can prevail if they regroup.
“It could happen that you lose against a top team like Atletico, but we must move on. We have to focus on the season until the end. It’s a long campaign, but everything is possible,” the German coach added.
“When we play as a team, with everyone giving 100 per cent, we have huge quality. Defeats happen, but it’s important how you respond. That reaction is what I want to see tomorrow.”
Flick confirmed that Brazilian winger Raphinha is fit for the Girona clash, while Marcus Rashford remains sidelined with a knee problem, though his recovery is progressing.
“Raphinha is very important. We’ve missed him, and you can see in training that he boosts intensity and dynamism,” Flick commented.
“Last season, for me, he was the best player in the world.”
Following the Atletico defeat, Barcelona lodged an official complaint with the Royal Spanish Football Federation regarding inconsistent refereeing. However, Flick took responsibility for the loss, emphasising that the team itself must improve.
“It was not the referee’s fault we lost the game. What we can change, we have to change, and we will,” he said.
Barcelona now face Girona at home in LaLiga, seeking a much-needed morale boost ahead of the second leg against Atletico. Their recent results illustrate the pressure on Flick’s side:
| Date | Competition | Opponent | Result | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 15 Feb 2026 | LaLiga | Real Sociedad | 1–2 L | Real Madrid gains 2 pts |
| 13 Feb 2026 | Copa del Rey Semifinal | Atletico Madrid | 0–4 L | First leg at Metropolitano |
| 10 Feb 2026 | LaLiga | Valencia | 3–1 W | Return to winning ways |
Barcelona’s players will need to demonstrate resilience and cohesion if they are to arrest their recent slump and maintain their title challenge in both LaLiga and domestic cup competitions.
