BNP and JCD Expel Local Leaders Following Attack on MP’s Convoy in Netrokona

In a swift administrative response to political violence, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and its student affiliate, the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), have expelled three local leaders in Netrokona. The disciplinary measures follow an assault on the convoy of Mashum Mostafa, the Member of Parliament for the Netrokona-5 constituency and a high-ranking official of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami.

The official expulsion orders were promulgated on Sunday, 26 April 2026, through formal statements issued by the central directorates of both organisations. These actions stem from a violent confrontation on the evening of Friday, 24 April, during which the MP’s vehicle was intercepted and vandalised in the Purbadhala Upazila.

BNP Central Directorate Issues Permanent Expulsion

The BNP central command announced the immediate and permanent expulsion of Ishtiaq Ahmed Babu, the Joint Convenor of the Purbadhala Upazila BNP. The directive, endorsed by the party’s Senior Joint Secretary General, Advocate Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, confirmed that Babu has been removed from all organisational roles and stripped of his primary membership.

According to the official communique, the expulsion is a direct result of Babu’s alleged participation in “terrorism, sabotage, and conduct detrimental to the party’s discipline.” The leadership reiterated that the BNP maintains a zero-tolerance policy regarding involvement in criminal activities or public disorder, particularly acts that target elected officials and destabilise regional peace.

Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal Penalises Student Leaders

Parallel to the BNP’s decision, the Chhatra Dal Central Committee took similar disciplinary steps against two of its members for their roles in the Friday evening incident. The following individuals have been penalised for breaching organisational discipline:

  • Saju Ahmed, the Member Secretary of the Purbadhala Upazila Chhatra Dal, has been relieved of his duties and removed from his post.

  • Solaiman Kabir, a former Joint Convenor of the same unit, has been expelled from his primary membership of the organisation.

The decision was authorised by JCD President Rakibul Islam Rakib and General Secretary Nasir Uddin Nasir. The central leadership has mandated that all members and affiliated units cease any further organisational association with the expelled individuals. This move is intended to protect the reputation of the student wing and ensure accountability for individual misconduct.

Details of the Incident and Regional Context

The assault occurred on Friday evening while MP Mashum Mostafa was conducting a scheduled visit to the Purbadhala region. A mob intercepted the MP’s convoy, resulting in a physical skirmish and significant damage to his vehicle, including shattered windows and exterior vandalism. While the MP did not suffer major physical injuries, the attack caused a significant stir in the local political landscape of Netrokona-5.

Jamaat-e-Islami leaders in the district have officially condemned the attack, characterising it as a deliberate provocation aimed at upsetting the political equilibrium of the area. Following the incident, local law enforcement increased patrols and security measures in the Upazila to prevent any retaliatory violence or further instability.

Strategic and Legal Implications

The decision by the BNP and JCD to expel their own members is interpreted by political analysts as a strategic effort to distance the national leadership from the violence. By enforcing strict internal discipline, the central command is attempting to signal a desire to maintain order and avoid direct confrontation with other political entities in the region.

While these expulsions represent internal political consequences, a criminal investigation into the vandalism and the threat to the MP’s safety is currently being conducted by the Netrokona district police. Authorities have stated that they are in the process of identifying all individuals involved in the mob action. As of Sunday evening, the expelled leaders have not issued a formal statement, and the BNP has renewed its call for its grassroots members to adhere strictly to the party’s non-violent code of conduct.

Regional administrative bodies have also noted that the maintenance of law and order is paramount as Netrokona prepares for various social and administrative events in the coming months, including a focus on local sporting development following the recent success of the national women’s hockey team.
