Five Buried After Family Killings

The funeral prayers and burial of five members of the same family, who were brutally killed in Gazipur’s Kapasia upazila, were completed on Sunday amid scenes of profound grief and mourning.

The victims were identified as Sharmin Akter, 30, her younger brother Rasul Molla, 18, and Sharmin’s three daughters — Mim Akter, 14, Umme Habiba, 10, and Faria, aged one year and four months.

According to family members and local sources, the funeral prayer was held at around 11:00am on Sunday in the Paikkandi area of Gopalganj. The bodies were later laid to rest at approximately 12:00pm at the Paikkandi Uttar Charpara graveyard.

Witnesses present at the family home described an atmosphere of overwhelming sorrow as the bodies arrived. Relatives, neighbours and local residents gathered in large numbers to pay their respects, while cries of grief echoed throughout the area.

Sharmin’s mother, Fereja Begum, 60, was seen repeatedly collapsing in distress after losing her daughter, son and three granddaughters in the incident. Speaking through tears, she said those responsible had “destroyed everything” she had left in life.

She also recalled that her son Rasul had recently bought new clothes and had left happily to visit his sister in Gazipur, unaware it would be his final journey.

“My youngest son was the treasure of my heart,” she lamented before reportedly losing consciousness again.

The killings took place early on Saturday morning in Rautkona village under Kapasia upazila in Gazipur district. According to initial reports, the five victims were found dead inside a room, each having suffered fatal throat injuries.

The gruesome nature of the incident has shocked residents across the district and prompted calls for swift justice.

Sharmin’s father, Shahadat Molla, directly accused a man named Forqan of carrying out the killings. He demanded the immediate arrest of the suspect as well as all others allegedly involved in the crime.

He told reporters that those responsible must face the “strictest possible punishment”, including capital punishment under the law.

Police have launched an investigation into the multiple homicide. Authorities are yet to release a full official account regarding motive, evidence or arrests.
