Fourteen Bangladeshi nationals, who had been trafficked into India after being lured by fraudulent promises of lucrative employment, have been successfully repatriated to Bangladesh. The individuals were returned via the Benapole land port on Friday evening, following a coordinated effort by cross-border authorities and human rights organisations.
At approximately 8:00 pm, the Petrapole Immigration Authorities in India formally handed the repatriated citizens over to the Benapole Checkpost Immigration Police. The transfer was facilitated under a special bilateral travel permit protocol arranged by the respective governments. The returnees, comprising both men and women, originate from various municipalities within the Sunamganj, Jessore, and Cox’s Bazar districts.
The repatriation process concludes a protracted ordeal for the fourteen citizens. According to Shariful Islam, a representative of the Benapole branch of the human rights non-governmental organisation (NGO) Justice & Care, the victims had originally crossed into Indian territory illegally through various porous border points. They had been manipulated by human trafficking syndicates exploiting their desires for better living conditions and improved financial prospects.
Upon their illegal entry into India, the individuals were apprehended by the Indian police for unlawful trespass. Following their arrest, the police presented the detainees before an Indian court. A local Indian human rights organisation subsequently intervened on their behalf, securing their release from judicial custody through court orders. The individuals were then accommodated in protective shelter homes while their cases were assessed.
Following their formal reception at the border, the Benapole Immigration Police Officer, Syed Mortaza Ali, confirmed that the necessary administrative and immigration formalities were promptly completed. The fourteen returnees were then transferred to the custody of the Benapole Port Police Station for initial logging.
Justice & Care has taken charge of the repatriated citizens to deliver immediate humanitarian relief, medical checks, and psychological evaluation. The NGO stated that it will provide comprehensive long-term legal support to help the victims seek justice against the trafficking syndicates, alongside targeted rehabilitation assistance to aid their reintegration into their respective home communities.
