Miraz Speaks on Senior Absences

The ongoing discussion surrounding two of Bangladesh cricket’s most experienced former captains, Shakib Al Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim, has once again come into focus following comments made by national team captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz ahead of the opening One Day International against New Zealand. His remarks during the pre-match press conference have generated considerable attention within cricketing circles, reigniting debate over experience, leadership and transition within the side.

Shakib Al Hasan last represented Bangladesh in October 2024. Since then, he has remained out of the national set-up amid a combination of circumstances, including wider political changes in the country and resulting complications that have affected his availability. Reports and discussions in recent months have suggested uncertainty regarding his return, with questions persisting over whether and when the all-rounder may again feature for Bangladesh. Despite his absence, Shakib continues to be a central topic of conversation among supporters and analysts, particularly concerning the impact of his experience and all-round capabilities on the team’s balance.

Addressing the issue, Miraz maintained that such matters do not significantly disrupt the dressing room environment. He emphasised that professional cricketers remain focused on performance and preparation, regardless of external narratives. According to him, decisions regarding selection and availability rest entirely with the Bangladesh Cricket Board, and there is little value in extending public debate on the matter. His comments reflected a pragmatic stance, suggesting that the team’s internal focus remains firmly on execution on the field rather than individual absences.

In contrast, Miraz was also questioned about Mushfiqur Rahim, who recently brought down the curtain on his One Day International career following the Champions Trophy. Mushfiqur, long regarded as one of Bangladesh’s most dependable performers, has been widely acknowledged for his technical consistency and leadership qualities. Miraz had previously spoken highly of him, particularly in relation to the stability and experience he brought to the side.

This time, however, while reiterating his respect for Mushfiqur’s decision, Miraz noted that his presence would have made leadership responsibilities easier due to his vast experience and calm influence in high-pressure situations. At the same time, he stressed that retirement is a personal decision and must be respected. He also reflected that, from a physical standpoint, Mushfiqur may have been capable of continuing for a longer period, though the final judgement always lies with the player himself.

The contrasting situations of these two senior figures continue to shape discussions around Bangladesh’s evolving cricket structure. Their absence has placed greater responsibility on the next generation of players, who are now expected to step into more prominent roles during key international assignments.
