A seemingly trivial altercation between a group of friends at a traditional Bengali New Year fair in northern Bangladesh has ended in tragedy after a 15-year-old schoolboy was beaten to death in Mymensingh’s Muktagacha upazila.
The incident occurred on Thursday evening at the Padurbari field, where a two-day-long Boishakhi Mela was underway. The victim, Mohammad Siam, a ninth-grade student at Mankon High School and son of Abdus Salam from Shibpur village, had gone to the fair with friends around 7:30 pm. What began as light-hearted interaction reportedly escalated into a verbal dispute between two groups of teenagers, which soon turned into a physical confrontation.
According to police and local witnesses, the initial scuffle appeared to have been resolved shortly after intervention from those present. However, the situation took a deadly turn when Siam was later isolated within the fairground. He was subsequently attacked and severely beaten by unidentified individuals, sustaining critical injuries.
Local residents rushed the injured teenager to Muktagacha Upazila Health Complex. Due to the severity of his condition, he was later transferred to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital. As his condition deteriorated further, doctors advised shifting him to Dhaka for advanced treatment. Tragically, Siam died around 4:00 am on Friday while being transported to the capital.
Police have detained two individuals for questioning in connection with the incident, including a 35-year-old man identified as Nazmul, son of Mannan from Ramnath Bari village, and a 13-year-old boy. Authorities have stated that these detentions are part of the initial investigation and more arrests are expected as efforts continue to identify those directly involved in the assault.
The police have described the incident as stemming from an ongoing dispute between youths from different localities attending the fair. Law enforcement officials have confirmed that preparations are underway to file a formal murder case, and efforts are ongoing to apprehend all individuals implicated in the attack.
Siam’s body has been sent to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital morgue for post-mortem examination.
