A violent clash between two factions of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) over garment waste—locally known as “jhut”—has left at least three people, including a child, injured by gunfire in Narayanganj’s Fatulla area, prompting police to arrest three youth wing leaders in connection with the incident.
The arrests were confirmed on Wednesday (15 April) by Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Mahbub of Fatulla Police Station. Clash over garment waste business turns violent
The violence erupted on the night of 9 April in the Chandni Housing area of Shasan Gaon in Enayetnagar, Fatulla. The confrontation reportedly began over control and distribution of discarded garment materials collected from local factories—a trade that has become economically significant in industrial Narayanganj.
Witnesses and local reports indicate that the dispute escalated rapidly between two rival BNP-linked groups, leading to armed clashes, gunfire, and crude bomb (cocktail) explosions. The incident lasted for around 30 minutes, creating panic among local residents.
At least three people, including a child, sustained bullet injuries during the confrontation. They were rushed to nearby medical facilities for treatment. Their conditions have not been officially detailed.
Legal proceedings and ongoing investigation
Following the incident, a case of attempted murder was filed at Fatulla Police Station. Law enforcement agencies subsequently launched a targeted operation to detain those suspected of involvement.
Police officials have indicated that the investigation is ongoing and that further arrests may follow depending on the findings.
Background: rising tensions over informal trade control
The incident highlights continuing tensions linked to informal and semi-organised control over the garment waste (jhut) trade in industrial zones such as Narayanganj. This sector, which involves the resale and recycling of discarded textile materials, is often reported to be associated with local power struggles and competing groups seeking control over supply chains.
Authorities have previously expressed concern over violent disputes linked to such economic activities, particularly where political affiliations intersect with local business interests.
Situation under scrutiny
Local law enforcement has increased monitoring in the Fatulla area following the clash, while residents have expressed concern over repeated incidents of political violence linked to commercial disputes.
The arrests mark a significant development in the case, though officials have yet to confirm whether further suspects remain at large or whether additional legal action will be taken in connection with the shooting and explosions.
