India’s 15-year-old batter Vaibhav Suryavanshi has set a new world record in List A cricket by scoring a half-century in just 11 balls. This is the fastest fifty recorded in the format.
The milestone was achieved today during the final of the tri-nation series in Dambulla, where India A faced Sri Lanka A. The tournament featured India A, Sri Lanka A, and Afghanistan A.
Suryavanshi’s innings broke the previous record of 12 balls, held by Sri Lanka’s Kusal Perera, who had reached fifty in 2005. The Indian batter was born in Bihar six years after that record was set.
In the 15 June group match of the same series against Sri Lanka A, Suryavanshi had been involved in a separate incident that drew criticism, where he made physical contact with Sri Lankan batter Vishen Halambage in India’s losing match.
In the final, however, he delivered a record-breaking batting performance. He reached his fifty in 11 balls, with 10 of those deliveries resulting in boundaries. His innings included five sixes, while only one delivery was left unscored.
After reaching the milestone, Suryavanshi continued his aggressive approach and progressed towards a century. He was eventually dismissed for 94 runs off 29 balls, having been caught at mid-off off the bowling of Sahan Arachchige. His innings included 10 fours and 8 sixes.
