Ten Injured As BNP Factions Clash Over Fish-Market

A violent confrontation involving chase, counter-chase, and physical assault erupted between two rival factions of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) over the territorial control of a local wholesale fish-market in the Raipur Upazila of Lakshmipur District on Saturday. The intense turf dispute, which transpired during the afternoon, took place at the Saju Molla fish-market zone, situated under the territorial jurisdiction of the Uttar Char Ababil Union. According to administrative and medical officials, the clashes left at least ten individuals with varying degrees of physical injuries.

Amongst the injured victims, four individuals—officially identified as Rabbi Hossain, aged 22, Farhad Hossain, aged 27, Suman Hossain, aged 30, and Delwar Hossain, aged 32—suffered significant lacerations and trauma, necessitating their immediate admission to the Raipur Upazila Health Complex for emergency medical treatment. Law enforcement authorities confirmed that despite the gravity of the public disturbance, no formal criminal case had been registered with the local police station by any of the feuding groups as of 9:30 pm on Saturday night.

Long-Standing Political Rivalries and Root Causes

Local administrative and intelligence sources revealed that the origin of the violent outbreak stems from a long-standing dispute over the administrative and economic management of the wholesale fish-market. The core animosity exists between Shafi Sardar, the Senior Joint General Secretary of the Ward No. 1 unit of the Uttar Char Ababil Union BNP, and Faruk Sardar, who serves as the Vice-President of the exact same ward-level committee.

The political profiles of the two confronting groups indicate deep-seated structural rivalries within the grassroots leadership of the opposition party. Investigative details clarify that Shafi Sardar operates in close political alignment with Mohiuddin, the Joint General Secretary of the broader Uttar Char Ababil Union BNP executive committee. On the opposing side, the faction led by Faruk Sardar is strongly supported by Abul Kalam Azad, the acting President of the Uttar Char Ababil Union unit of the Jatiyatabadi Juba Dal—the dedicated youth wing of the BNP. Local residents testified that these two leadership blocks have routinely clashed over regional influence and the control of profitable agrarian trade hubs for an extended duration.

Conflicting Depositions and Executive Assertions

On the morning of the incident, an altercation initiated between the immediate supporters of Shafi Sardar and Faruk Sardar regarding operational jurisdictions at the market. The verbal dispute escalated rapidly into a physical confrontation during the afternoon, with hundreds of supporters wielding local implements and engaging in retaliatory attacks across the trade complex.

  • Faction A Leadership: Shafi Sardar (Senior Joint General Secretary, Ward No. 1 BNP) and Mohiuddin (Joint General Secretary, Union BNP).

  • Faction B Leadership: Faruk Sardar (Vice-President, Ward No. 1 BNP) and Abul Kalam Azad (Acting President, Union Juba Dal).

  • Location of Clash: Saju Molla wholesale fish-market, Uttar Char Ababil Union, Raipur, Lakshmipur.

  • Casualties: Ten individuals injured, with four admitted to the Raipur Upazila Health Complex.

Levelling formal accusations against his political rivals, Shafi Uddin alleged that Faruk Sardar, alongside Juba Dal leader Abul Kalam Azad and an accomplice named Tarek Sardar, intentionally mobilised over a hundred external individuals from outside the union. Shafi claimed that this large group launched an unprovoked, pre-planned assault with the explicit intent of forcibly seizing the financial assets and management rights of the fish-market, resulting in serious injuries to Rabbi and Farhad.

Conversely, Faruk Sardar completely denied the allegations of external mobilization and forced occupation. He asserted that he and a dedicated consortium of local merchants had been lawfully managing and operating the specific fish-market for the past 17 years without institutional interruption. Faruk claimed that the supporters of Shafi Sardar initially engaged in internal fighting amongst themselves over personal grievances before launching a coordinated physical assault on his staff.

Concurrently, the acting Juba Dal President, Abul Kalam Azad, defended his innocence, stating that he had absolutely no prior involvement or complicity in the organization of the dispute. Azad maintained that he was being maliciously targeted by political opponents to damage his institutional reputation, asserting that he had only arrived at the market after the violence began to actively mediate between the fighting groups and restore peace.

The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of the Raipur Police Station, Shahin Miah, confirmed that a police detachment was deployed to the area to disperse the crowds. OC Miah stated that the situation has been brought fully under control and remains stable. He emphasized that law enforcement will initiate formal statutory investigations and take strict legal action against the perpetrators as soon as a written complaint is officially submitted to the department.
