As the national elections draw near, the atmosphere across Bangladesh is a mixture of festive anticipation among the public and a quiet sense of farewell within the caretaker government. Preparations for the transition of power are now well underway, with some officials already initiating formalities, while others are gearing up to conclude their tenure.

Among these preparations, interim government advisers have begun returning their government residences and diplomatic passports to the relevant authorities. Reports indicate that two advisers have already vacated their official residences, submitting formal letters to the Ministry of Housing and Public Works to facilitate the handover process. Meanwhile, at least 13 advisers, along with a senior contractual officer, have submitted their diplomatic “red” passports.

Some advisers expressed that they intend to keep their red passports close until their official duties conclude, after which they will submit them along with all other government property. Others have already begun transferring personal documents and official items from government offices to their homes via staff, ensuring that crucial files are signed and ready for the incoming administration. The overarching aim is a seamless transition, enabling the new government to assume responsibilities without delay or administrative hurdles.

Specifically, Housing and Public Works Adviser Adilur Rahman Khan and Power and Energy Adviser Muhammad Fauzul Kabir Khan have submitted letters regarding vacating their official residences. Several more advisers are expected to leave their government accommodations and surrender their diplomatic passports before the national elections scheduled for 12 February.

According to a senior official, speaking on condition of anonymity, returning the red passport is linked to applying for a new passport through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Once the new passport is issued, the diplomatic passport automatically becomes invalid.

Officials emphasise that these steps reflect the interim government’s commitment to ensuring an orderly and prompt transition, minimising any disruption once the newly elected administration assumes office.
