A tragic road accident in northern Bangladesh has claimed the lives of two brothers while they were returning home on foot, leaving a young boy critically injured and the local community in deep shock.
The incident occurred at around 11:00 pm on Tuesday along the Nilphamari–Syedpur highway in the Eastern Sutipara Jamtoli area of Nilphamari district. According to police and eyewitness accounts, three pedestrians were walking home after visiting the Darowani Textile Market in the district town when a speeding truck struck them from behind. The vehicle reportedly lost control or failed to notice the pedestrians in time before running them over.
The deceased were identified as 19-year-old Sihab Hossain and his six-year-old brother Md Soaad, sons of Tarekul Islam from the West Kuchiamor area of Nilphamari Sadar upazila. A third victim, 10-year-old Md Hossain, son of Stalin Islam from the same locality, sustained serious injuries and is currently undergoing treatment at Nilphamari 250-bed General Hospital.
Witnesses described a sudden and horrifying scene in which the truck struck the group at high speed, leaving no opportunity for escape. Local residents rushed to the scene immediately after the collision and found the two brothers dead on the spot. The injured child was quickly transported to hospital by locals before emergency services arrived.
Police confirmed that the truck driver fled the scene immediately after the crash, abandoning the vehicle. Law enforcement authorities have since launched an operation to identify and apprehend the driver, and the truck is being traced as part of the ongoing investigation. Following necessary legal procedures, the bodies of the deceased were handed over to their family members.
Authorities have expressed concern over rising road accidents on highways in the region, particularly involving speeding heavy vehicles during night hours. Local residents have also raised concerns about inadequate road safety measures, including poor lighting and insufficient monitoring of traffic speed on this busy route.
