India’s preparations for the 2026 T20 World Cup have hit a potential setback ahead of their second match, with concerns mounting over the fitness of opener Abhishek Sharma. The Men in Blue are scheduled to face Namibia on 12 February in New Delhi, but Sharma’s participation is now in doubt. He was notably absent from the team’s first practice session on Tuesday at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.
Reports confirm that Sharma has been admitted to hospital due to a severe abdominal infection, casting uncertainty over his availability for the crucial encounter against Namibia. The likelihood of him missing the match appears high.
Sharma’s troubles began during India’s opening match against the United States, where he had already been unwell. He managed only a score of zero before being unable to participate in the second innings, with Sanju Samson stepping in as a substitute fielder. Following the match, Sharma’s condition worsened, and he was not seen participating in team celebrations.
During the previous game at Wankhede Stadium, Sharma reportedly battled a fever and received intravenous saline treatment for rapid relief. While team management initially described the issue as a minor stomach upset, sources now indicate that the infection is more serious, significantly reducing the chances of his appearance against Namibia.
Assistant coach Ryan ten Descate commented on Sharma’s condition:
“Abhishek’s stomach issue has not fully resolved. We are hopeful that within the next two days he will be fit enough to play.”
Despite his illness, Sharma travelled with the team to New Delhi. However, reports suggest that his physical condition deteriorated over the last 24 hours. He was present at a special team dinner hosted by head coach Gautam Gambhir on 8 February, yet uncertainty surrounds his readiness for match play.
Tuesday’s practice session saw Sanju Samson taking net sessions in Sharma’s absence. Samson, who struggled for form during the recent New Zealand series, faced challenges against bowlers Arshdeep Singh and Hardik Pandya, even receiving treatment on his left hand during practice.
Ryan ten Descate added:
“Our priority remains Abhishek’s fitness. The final team combination will largely depend on his recovery.”
A clearer picture of Sharma’s availability is expected after India’s final practice session in New Delhi on Wednesday.
