A high-profile convoy transporting German World Cup winner Mesut Özil and Bilal Erdoğan, son of the Turkish President, was involved in a road traffic accident early this evening. The collision occurred on the Cox’s Bazar-Teknaf road as the delegation was returning from a humanitarian visit to the Rohingya refugee camps.

The incident took place at approximately 6:45 pm in the Ukhiya Kutupalong area. According to local authorities, a battery-powered auto-rickshaw (locally known as a “Tomtom”) abruptly breached the high-security VIP protocol, veering into the path of the speeding motorcade. One of the escort vehicles subsequently struck the rickshaw, leaving the smaller vessel severely mangled.

Emergency Response and Casualties

Saiful Islam, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of the Ukhiya Shah Porir Dwip Highway Police Station, confirmed the details of the crash. He stated that despite the rigorous security cordons typically afforded to such international dignitaries, the auto-rickshaw appeared suddenly, making a collision unavoidable for the convoy driver.

“While returning from the refugee camps, an auto-rickshaw suddenly entered the convoy of footballer Mesut Özil and Bilal Erdoğan, breaking VIP protocol,” OC Saiful Islam reported. “A collision occurred with one of the vehicles in the fleet. We have since seized the auto-rickshaw.”

The driver of the rickshaw sustained injuries in the impact and was treated at a local medical facility. Fortunately, his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening. Mesut Özil, Bilal Erdoğan, and the rest of the diplomatic party were reported to be unharmed and continued their journey shortly after the site was secured.
