A tragic incident in Nazirpur upazila of Pirojpur district has claimed the lives of two young brothers after they drowned while bathing in a local canal. The heartbreaking accident occurred on Wednesday afternoon in Amtala village under Nazirpur Sadar Union.
The deceased have been identified as six-year-old Abdur Rahman and four-year-old Abu Bakkar, sons of Miraj Fakir. The children originally hailed from Bhartakathi village under Guaarekha Union in neighbouring Neserabad upazila. According to family sources, the two brothers had been visiting their maternal grandparents’ home in Amtala village for several days prior to the incident.
On the day of the tragedy, the children went to a nearby canal adjacent to the house to bathe, as is common in rural areas during warm weather. At some point during their play in the water, they slipped under the surface and disappeared from sight. Their family members, initially unaware of what had happened, began searching for them when they could not be found nearby.
After an anxious search, local residents discovered the two boys floating in the canal near a ghat (bathing point). They were immediately pulled from the water and rushed to Nazirpur Upazila Health Complex in hopes of saving their lives. However, attending doctors declared both children dead upon arrival.
Medical staff confirmed that there were no signs of life when the boys were brought in. Despite emergency attention, resuscitation efforts could not be attempted successfully due to the condition in which they arrived.
The incident has cast a deep shadow of grief over both the maternal and paternal families, as well as the wider community. Neighbours gathered at the hospital and later at the village home, expressing shock and sorrow over the sudden loss of two young lives.
