Ireland produced one of the biggest upsets in recent Twenty20 International cricket by defeating India by 34 runs in the opening match of the series in Belfast, while India’s decision to leave teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi out of the playing XI sparked widespread criticism from supporters and former England captain Michael Vaughan.
After being asked to bat first, Ireland posted a competitive total of 182 for 9. India, despite boasting an experienced batting line-up, failed to mount a successful chase and were bowled out for 148 in 18.5 overs, handing the hosts a memorable victory.
The defeat alone was enough to disappoint Indian supporters, but much of the post-match discussion centred on the absence of 15-year-old Suryavanshi, whose expected international debut had generated enormous excitement in the build-up to the series.
The teenager has emerged as one of the brightest talents in Indian cricket after producing remarkable performances in age-group competitions, domestic cricket, the Indian Premier League and, more recently, during India A’s tour of Sri Lanka. His rapid rise convinced selectors to include him in India’s squads for the tours of Ireland and England, raising expectations that he would become the country’s youngest-ever international cricketer.
Those hopes were dashed before the match even began.
At the toss, India captain Shreyas Iyer confirmed that Suryavanshi had not been included in the starting XI. Asked whether the youngster would make his debut, Iyer simply replied, “Unfortunately, no.”
He explained that the team management had decided to retain faith in the senior players who had performed consistently in recent series.
“Vaibhav is a destructive batter,” Iyer said. “But we have experienced players in our squad who have performed exceptionally well for India over the past few series. We are continuing to back those senior players. When the right time comes, Vaibhav will definitely get his opportunity.”
The explanation did little to satisfy many supporters, who took to social media to question the decision, particularly after India’s batting line-up struggled in the run chase.
Among those expressing surprise was former England captain Michael Vaughan, who publicly questioned India’s selection policy.
Writing on social media during the match, Vaughan said: “I can’t believe India didn’t give Vaibhav an opportunity. Right now, he is the best batter in T20 cricket.”
His remarks quickly attracted widespread attention, adding further momentum to the debate over whether India missed an opportunity to introduce one of the country’s most exciting young talents on the international stage.
Interest in Suryavanshi’s possible debut had remained high despite global attention being focused on the FIFA World Cup. Many Indian cricket fans had tuned in primarily to witness the teenager’s first appearance in national colours and the possibility of him breaking Sachin Tendulkar’s long-standing record as India’s youngest international cricketer.
Instead, the record remains intact for now.
India’s team management has consistently maintained that Suryavanshi’s development will not be rushed merely to achieve a milestone. The youngster faces strong competition for a place at the top of the batting order, where established performers continue to justify their selection with consistent displays.
With one more T20 International remaining in Ireland before India travel to England for a white-ball series, Suryavanshi still has several opportunities to make his debut. Should he feature in any of those matches, he would become the youngest player ever to represent India in international cricket.
For now, however, Ireland’s historic victory and India’s selection decisions have become the defining talking points of the series opener, leaving supporters eager to see whether the highly rated teenager will finally receive his long-awaited opportunity in the matches ahead.
