A newborn baby girl was rescued alive after being abandoned next to a communal dustbin on the premises of the Gajaria Upazila Health Complex in Munshiganj. The infant was discovered in the early hours of Monday morning, drawing immediate attention from medical staff and patients’ relatives. This distressing incident has sparked widespread concern and indignation across the local community.
The discovery unfolded at around 1:30 am when a few relatives of patients, standing on the balcony of the hospital’s first floor, heard the distinct sound of a baby crying through the silence of the night. Intrigued and alarmed, they alerted the on-duty nursing staff. A small group immediately went downstairs to investigate the source of the cries with torches. Their search led them to the hospital courtyard, where they found the vulnerable infant wrapped in a piece of cloth, left on the ground right beside the dustbin.
Medical personnel acted swiftly to retrieve the child, moving her to the emergency ward for immediate clinical assessment. A nursing officer noted that the physical condition of the baby suggested she had been born earlier that very night. It appeared she had been abandoned within hours of her birth. Crucially, hospital records and internal reviews confirmed that no such birth had taken place within the Gajaria Upazila Health Complex itself during that timeframe.
Hospital authorities strongly suspect that the delivery occurred at a nearby private clinic, diagnostic centre, or an unauthorised facility. The perpetrator likely selected the government hospital grounds under the cover of darkness to ensure the child would eventually be found and cared for.
Dr Sad Karim, the attending physician at the emergency department of the Gajaria Upazila Health Complex, confirmed the details of the initial treatment. Upon examination, medical staff noticed a minor injury on the infant’s head. Given the circumstances, the hospital management immediately notified the Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) to initiate official administrative protocols. To ensure the child received specialist paediatric attention, she was transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital between 2:30 am and 3:00 am, escorted by local village police and hospital representatives.
Efforts are now underway to identify the biological parents and determine the exact circumstances surrounding the abandonment. Sabbir premature Hossain, the Inspector (Investigation) of Gajaria Police Station, stated that law enforcement officers are actively investigating the matter. They are reviewing surrounding movements and coordinating with local healthcare providers. He added that the police are working in tandem with the Department of Social Services and the upazila administration to ensure the child’s legal protection, long-term safety, and proper rehabilitation once her medical treatment concludes in Dhaka.
