A life-term prisoner serving his sentence at Narayanganj District Jail has died while undergoing treatment at a local hospital after suffering a heart attack, prison authorities have confirmed.
The deceased, identified as Jahangir, 38, had been serving a life sentence since 2014 in connection with a criminal case filed in Rupganj upazila of Narayanganj. His death occurred on Monday night at Narayanganj Victoria Hospital, where he had been receiving medical treatment. The matter became publicly known on Tuesday afternoon after prison officials confirmed the incident to the media.
According to Mohammad Forkan Wahid, Superintendent of Narayanganj District Jail, Jahangir fell seriously ill on Sunday after experiencing cardiac complications while in custody. He was immediately transferred from the prison to Narayanganj Victoria Hospital for specialised treatment, where doctors admitted him for medical care.
Despite efforts by the attending physicians, Jahangir’s condition deteriorated and he died on Monday night while undergoing treatment.
Prison authorities said Jahangir was the son of the late Abdur Rahim and hailed from Baniyapara village in Araihazar upazila. He had remained in Narayanganj District Jail for more than a decade after being convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment in a case originating from Rupganj in 2014.
Following his death, the body was sent for a post-mortem examination in accordance with the legal procedures governing deaths in custody. After the examination was completed, the body was handed over to his family for burial.
Officials have not disclosed any indication of suspicious circumstances surrounding the death. According to the prison authorities, Jahangir had been receiving medical attention after becoming critically ill, and his death was attributed to complications arising from a heart attack.
Deaths of inmates in custody are routinely subject to medico-legal examination to establish the cause of death and ensure compliance with legal procedures. In cases where prisoners require treatment beyond the capacity of prison medical facilities, they are transferred to government hospitals under security arrangements.
The prison administration has not announced any further investigation into the incident, and no allegations of negligence or foul play have been reported in connection with Jahangir’s death.
Authorities said all necessary legal formalities were completed before the body was released to the family, bringing an end to the official procedures following the prisoner’s death.
