An evening dedicated to the enduring legacy of Rabindranath Tagore brought together poetry, music, narration and reflection at Chhayanat Cultural Centre in Dhanmondi, Dhaka, where admirers of the Nobel laureate paid tribute to one of the greatest figures in Bengali literature and culture.
The programme, titled Eshechhe Robir Kor (The Rays of the Sun Have Arrived), was held on Saturday evening and marked the inaugural presentation of Mantramugdha, a youth-centred recitation initiative. Conceived as a literary and musical tribute, the event explored Tagore’s vast intellectual and artistic legacy through an integrated presentation of his poetry, songs, writings inspired by him and spoken narration.
The organisers described the event as a heartfelt homage to Rabindranath Tagore’s multidimensional philosophy of life, literary vision and enduring humanistic ideals. Rather than focusing solely on his achievements as a poet, the programme sought to portray him as a thinker whose influence extended across literature, education, philosophy, music and social thought.
Tagore remains one of the defining figures of Bengali identity. His literary works, songs and essays continue to shape the cultural consciousness of Bengali-speaking people across generations. As the first Asian to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913, he left behind a body of work that transcends national boundaries while remaining deeply rooted in the language, history and traditions of Bengal.
Reflecting that broad legacy, the opening segment of the evening centred entirely on Tagore. His original writings were interwoven with poems written in his honour, Rabindra Sangeet performances and carefully crafted narration to create a cohesive artistic presentation. The programme aimed to present not only the beauty of his literary creations but also the timeless relevance of his ideas on humanity, compassion, education and freedom.
The narrative portions of the event were presented by acclaimed actors Shaheen Khan and Afsana Mimi, whose performances helped connect the various literary and musical segments into a unified stage production.
Recitations were delivered by Belayet Hossain, Iqbal Khorshed, Ahsan Dip, Nayla Tarannum Chowdhury, Sheikh Faisal Ahmed, Shirin Islam, Shikha Sengupta, Mahmuda Akter Meera, Kazi Rajesh, Dolly Das, Amiya Amanat and Joy Hasan. Their performances featured both Tagore’s own compositions and poems dedicated to the celebrated writer, offering audiences an opportunity to revisit familiar works while appreciating new interpretations.
The musical dimension of the evening was provided by Tanzina Ana and Moshfikur Rahman Turya, who performed Rabindra Sangeet, the genre of songs composed and written by Tagore that continues to occupy a central place in Bengali musical heritage.
Writer and cultural personality Iqbal Khorshed attended the programme as the guest of honour. The stage lighting was designed by Anjan Biswas, whose visual arrangements complemented the atmosphere of the production.
By bringing together literature, recitation, music and theatrical narration in a single presentation, Eshechhe Robir Kor highlighted the continuing relevance of Rabindranath Tagore’s creative and philosophical legacy. The organisers expressed their intention to use the newly launched Mantramugdha platform to encourage younger generations to engage more deeply with Bengali literature, poetry and the country’s rich cultural traditions through similar artistic initiatives in the future.
