A local Jamaat-e-Islami leader was allegedly beaten in Patuakhali’s Bauphal upazila following accusations of an inappropriate relationship with a married woman living in his neighbourhood, sparking tension and widespread discussion among residents.
The injured man has been identified as Faruk Hossain Pyada, secretary of the Jamaat’s unit in Ward No. 3 of Daspara Union. He was rescued after the incident and admitted to Bauphal Upazila Health Complex, where he is receiving treatment.
The incident reportedly took place at around 9.30pm on Wednesday, 29 July, in the area of Ward No. 3 of Daspara Union. While the allegation surrounding the alleged relationship has attracted considerable attention locally, its authenticity has not yet been independently verified.
According to local eyewitnesses, several people saw Faruk Hossain near the home of a married woman on the night of the incident. The locals allegedly detained him and subsequently assaulted him, accusing him of maintaining an inappropriate relationship with the woman. At one stage, he sustained injuries and was taken to the local health complex for medical treatment.
The woman’s mother-in-law has made a number of allegations against Faruk Hossain. She claimed that he had allegedly been harassing her daughter-in-law for a considerable period and had made inappropriate proposals to her while also attempting to entice her with money. According to her account, the alleged contact between the two eventually became closer. She further claimed that the family initially found it difficult to believe the allegations, but later became convinced after allegedly seeing photographs that they believed indicated a relationship between the two.
Faruk Hossain, however, has strongly denied the allegations. He said there had been no affair and claimed that the assault stemmed from an earlier dispute and his demand for the repayment of money he had lent. He alleged that several individuals, including Saidul and Parvez, attacked him and that Tk 50,000 and a mobile phone were taken from him during the incident. He also claimed that the allegation of an affair had been fabricated to damage his reputation.
The conflicting accounts have left the circumstances surrounding the incident unclear. Neither the allegation against Faruk Hossain nor his counterclaims about the assault and alleged theft have been conclusively established through an investigation.
Bauphal police station officer-in-charge Sirajul Islam said police visited the scene after receiving information about the assault. He said officers had so far found no confirmed information substantiating the allegation of an inappropriate relationship.
The officer said that if a written complaint is submitted, police will investigate the matter and take appropriate legal action based on the findings. He also urged residents not to take the law into their own hands.
Law enforcement authorities have repeatedly stressed that allegations of wrongdoing should be investigated through established legal procedures rather than addressed through physical violence. Even if an allegation is ultimately found to be true, any legal action must be taken by the appropriate authorities.
Police said the statements of those involved, accounts from eyewitnesses and any available evidence would need to be examined before the circumstances of the incident could be established. A formal complaint and subsequent investigation could help determine the cause of the confrontation, establish whether any assault or theft occurred, and clarify the roles of those allegedly involved.
For now, the incident remains subject to investigation, while the central allegation that triggered the assault remains unverified.
