Explosion in Shariatpur house leaves bloodied bodies scattered nearby

In a shocking incident early on Thursday, a young man was killed in Shariatpur’s Jajira Upazila following a cocktail bomb explosion. The victim, identified as Sohan Byapari, 32, was found dead in a paddy field approximately half a kilometre from his home in Bilashpur Union.

According to local police, the explosion occurred at a residence in Byaparikandi village. Sohan’s body was discovered in a nearby field in Satghariakandi village. He was the son of Delowar Byapari.

Family members revealed that Sohan had previously been involved in a dispute with a local rival, Nasir Byapari, which had led to a police case being filed against him. Due to safety concerns, Sohan rarely stayed at home and often moved between relatives’ houses. On Wednesday night, around 11 p.m., he left his home and was later found dead the following morning in the field.

Jajira Police Officer-in-Charge Saleh Ahmed told Prothom Alo that the house where the explosion occurred contained bombs and equipment used to manufacture cocktail bombs. “We are investigating how the incident took place and the circumstances leading to the victim’s death. The area is currently cordoned off,” he stated.

Sohan’s sister, Majeda Akhtar, confirmed that her brother had longstanding disputes with Nasir Byapari and his supporters. “He could not stay at home due to threats. On Wednesday night, he left the house and by morning we were informed of his lifeless body in the field,” she said.

This is not the first incident in the area. Last Sunday, over a hundred cocktail explosions were reported during clashes between rival factions at Budhairhat Bazaar in Bilashpur Union, resulting in injuries to a 20-year-old, Jabed Sheikh.

According to Jajira police, violent confrontations between supporters of different local leaders occur frequently, often involving the use of improvised explosives. Previous incidents in April and November of last year also drew nationwide attention. Several supporters, including Abdul Jalil Matbor, have faced legal action under the Explosives Act. Currently, some faction leaders are attempting to reassert dominance in the area.
