DHAKA — Bangladesh’s deep-rooted passion for Argentine football was on full display once again as Marcelo Carlos Cesa, the Argentine Ambassador to Bangladesh, joined hundreds of students at Dhaka University to watch a crucial World Cup match. The envoy arrived at the Haji Muhammad Muhsin Hall playground to experience first-hand how the South Asian nation celebrates the fixtures of the Albiceleste.
The Ambassador arrived at the venue amidst tight security and roaring cheers from fans dressed in the iconic sky-blue and white jerseys. The screening featured a highly anticipated World Cup match between Argentina and Austria. Witnessing the boundless enthusiasm and rhythmic chanting for both the national team and talisman Lionel Messi, Ambassador Cesa found himself visibly moved by the spectacle.
“I feel as if I am in my own country,” Cesa remarked, scanning the sea of passionate supporters. “It genuinely feels like I am back home in Argentina.”
The fixture, held in Dallas, USA, was scheduled to kick off at midnight local time, yet the atmosphere at the university campus began building hours in advance. By early evening, students and local football enthusiasts from various parts of the city started congregating at the Muhsin Hall grounds. To mark the high-profile diplomatic visit and heighten the match-day excitement, the Muhsin Hall unit of Chhatradal organised a vibrant cultural programme, adding a festive flavour to the sporting event.
Ambassador Cesa was not alone in witnessing this unique display of cross-continental adoration. He was accompanied by a notable delegation of Argentine public figures, creatives, and cultural representatives keen to document the Bangladeshi football phenomenon. Among the delegation was Dan Lande, a well-known Argentine author, content creator, and cultural envoy. The group also included popular social media influencer Ruli, alongside creative professionals Manuel Javier Ezquerra Ramon, Martin de Escalada, Martina Zoe Gondell, and Santiago Conde.
The visiting delegation spent time interacting with the local student body, capturing photographs against a backdrop of massive flags and the distinct drone of vuvuzelas. This gathering highlights a growing cultural and diplomatic bond between Buenos Aires and Dhaka, a relationship heavily fortified by an shared obsession with the beautiful game.
