Bangladesh Stumble, Shanto-Litton Rescue

In the third and final One Day International of the three-match series in Chattogram, Bangladesh endured a shaky start after losing the toss and being asked to bat first against New Zealand. The home side immediately found themselves under sustained pressure from a disciplined and lively Kiwi pace attack, which struck early and repeatedly to leave Bangladesh reeling.

The innings began in disastrous fashion when Saif Hassan fell on the second delivery of the match, failing to score as he edged a sharp, rising delivery from Will O’Rourke to the wicketkeeper. The early breakthrough set the tone for what followed. O’Rourke struck again in his next over, removing Tanzid Tamim for just 2 runs, further deepening Bangladesh’s trouble inside the first few overs.

The situation worsened quickly when Soumya Sarkar attempted to stabilise the innings alongside Najmul Hossain Shanto. However, the brief resistance was cut short as Sarkar, who had made 18, was dismissed with Bangladesh still struggling for momentum. Within a short span, the hosts slumped to 32 for 3, placing immense pressure on the middle order.

At that critical juncture, captain Najmul Hossain Shanto and experienced batter Litton Das took responsibility for rebuilding the innings. Initially cautious, the pair focused on survival, carefully negotiating the movement and bounce offered by the New Zealand seamers. Gradually, they shifted gears, rotating strike and punishing loose deliveries to restore some balance to the innings.

By the time of reporting, Bangladesh had reached 124 for 3 in 28.1 overs, with the Shanto–Litton partnership steadily gaining control over proceedings. Shanto remained unbeaten on a composed 65, while Litton Das supported him effectively with 35 not out. Their partnership had become the cornerstone of Bangladesh’s recovery, transforming a collapse into a rebuilding phase with the possibility of a competitive total still within reach.

The innings has now hinged on the resilience of this fourth-wicket partnership. After the early collapse, their measured approach and growing confidence have offered Bangladesh a lifeline. The key question remains whether they can convert this recovery into a match-defining total capable of challenging New Zealand’s batting strength later in the contest.
