American rapper Cardi B has reportedly fallen victim to a rapid credit card fraud incident in which unauthorised transactions totalling around $60,000 (approximately 7.3 million Bangladeshi taka) were made after her card went missing.
The Grammy-winning artist revealed the incident during a live social media broadcast, explaining that her American Express card was lost and almost immediately exploited by unknown individuals. According to her account, the spending spree was swift and appeared to target high-end retail purchases as well as technology products.
Cardi B stated that she was alerted to the transactions in real time, as her credit card was linked to her mobile phone, enabling instant notifications for every purchase attempt. Initially, she assumed that someone from her team might have been responsible for the unexpected spending. However, as further large transactions continued to appear, she quickly realised that the situation involved fraud.
She responded by immediately freezing the card and contacting the relevant financial institutions. Despite the rapid action, a significant amount of money had already been spent before the account was secured.
During her live remarks, she expressed strong frustration and warned that those responsible would face legal consequences. She also claimed to possess security camera footage allegedly showing several individuals using the card, and suggested that there were also attempts to withdraw cash from an automated teller machine.
Beyond the personal financial loss, the incident has drawn attention to the growing risks of digital financial fraud, even for high-profile individuals with substantial resources and security measures in place. The case highlights how quickly modern payment systems can be exploited when physical cards fall into the wrong hands.
Cardi B, whose real name is Belcalis Marlenis Almánzar, is one of the most recognisable figures in contemporary hip-hop. She rose to international fame with hit tracks such as Bodak Yellow and I Like It, and has since become a prominent cultural and commercial figure in the global music industry.
| Category of Activity | Description | Status/Outcome |
|---|---|---|
| Luxury fashion purchases | High-end clothing and accessories | Majority of confirmed spending |
| Technology goods | Electronic devices and related items | Significant portion of transactions |
| Cash withdrawal attempt | Attempted ATM withdrawal activity | Reported but reportedly unsuccessful |
| Card deactivation response | Card frozen and accounts notified | Executed after detection |
Authorities and financial security experts often note that real-time notification systems, while useful for detection, can still leave a short window in which fraudsters may operate. In this case, that brief interval was reportedly enough for thousands of dollars to be spent before the card was fully disabled.
The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of immediate card cancellation procedures and robust authentication safeguards, particularly as digital payment systems continue to dominate global financial transactions.
