China–Russia Joint Air Patrol Near Japanese Borders

In a show of strategic military coordination, Russia and China conducted a joint bomber patrol in the vicinity of Japan’s territorial waters, prompting heightened alert across Tokyo. The Japanese Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF) swiftly scrambled aircraft to monitor and secure the national airspace, underscoring the growing tensions between Tokyo and Beijing.

The Ministry of Defence in Tokyo confirmed the operation on Tuesday (9 December), revealing that two Russian Tu-95 strategic bombers, capable of carrying nuclear payloads, flew from the Sea of Japan towards the East China Sea. En route, they joined two Chinese H-6 bombers for a long-range patrol over the western Pacific Ocean.

Subsequently, four Chinese J-16 fighter jets rendezvoused with the bomber formation, conducting operations over the waters between Okinawa and the Miyako Islands—an area internationally recognised as open sea. During this period, Russian A-50 early warning aircraft and two Su-30 fighter jets were also detected over the Sea of Japan.

Japan’s Defence Minister, Shinjiro Koizumi, tweeted, “The joint manoeuvre by Russia and China clearly demonstrates a display of power against our nation. It represents a serious concern for Japan’s national security.” He added that Japanese aircraft followed all protocols for airspace identification and defensive response.

According to Russian media, Moscow’s Ministry of Defence described the joint flight as an eight-hour mission. Meanwhile, South Korea’s military reported that seven Russian and two Chinese aircraft had entered its air defence identification zone on Tuesday.

This latest manoeuvre follows a similar incident last Sunday, when Japanese radar detected aircraft launched from a Chinese aircraft carrier. Beijing, however, has denied any aggressive intent. Analysts note that China’s military activities have intensified following Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s warning last month that Tokyo would respond to any Chinese military action perceived as a threat to Japan, particularly regarding Taiwan. In recent years, China and Russia have conducted numerous joint exercises and coordinated military training operations.

The joint patrol is widely interpreted by regional analysts as a demonstration of military synergy between Beijing and Moscow, heightening strategic vigilance across East Asia.
