The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has officially announced a 16-member senior squad for the upcoming bilateral Twenty20 International (T20I) series against Ireland and England. The announcement, released via an official communication on social media, features the historic inclusion of 15-year-old opening batsman Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. This selection comes immediately after his breakthrough campaign in the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL), where he topped the tournament scoring charts with 776 runs in 16 matches for the Rajasthan Royals. His stellar run earned him both the prestigious Orange Cap and the tournament’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) award.

Eclipsing Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar’s Historic Milestone
Should Sooryavanshi feature in a competitive fixture against either Ireland or England, he will officially establish a new national record as the youngest cricketer to debut for India in international cricket history.
This historic milestone is currently held by the legendary Indian batsman Sachin Tendulkar. Tendulkar made his international bow for the national team in a Test match against Pakistan in November 1989 at the age of 16 years and 205 days. Sooryavanshi, who celebrated his 15th birthday in March, stands on the verge of eclipsing a national record that has remained unbroken for over three decades. Within the T20I format, the current Indian record for the youngest debutant belongs to all-rounder Washington Sundar, who made his debut against Sri Lanka in 2017 at the age of 18 years and 80 days.
Structural Captaincy Shifts and Suryakumar Yadav Omission
Beyond the inclusion of the teenage phenomenon, the BCCI selection committee introduced critical structural changes to the team hierarchy. Most notably, senior batsman Suryakumar Yadav has been omitted entirely from the 16-member travelling squad. This tactical decision comes despite Yadav recently captaining the Indian national team to victory in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 on home soil, where India defeated New Zealand in the final.
Addressing the decision, selection panel chairman Ajit Agarkar noted that while removing a World Cup-winning captain is a difficult choice, the committee felt it was the best way forward to reassess the team strategy following a major global tournament.
In his place, the cricket board has appointed middle-order batsman Shreyas Iyer to captain the national side for the upcoming assignments, which also include the Asian Games in Japan later this year. To support Iyer in his new leadership duties, top-order batter Tilak Varma has been named as the vice-captain of the squad.
Comprehensive 16-Member T20I Squad Profile
The selected touring party consists of a blend of experienced international regulars, recent World Cup winners, and emerging domestic performers. The squad incorporates multiple specialist spin options, an established pace battery, and an explosive top-order batting line-up designed to adapt to the playing conditions in Belfast and England. Notably, uncapped fast bowler Prince Yadav has also received his maiden T20I call-up following impressive domestic performances.
