A fatal confrontation erupted in Shunderganj Upazila, Ghaibandha, centred on the distribution of burnt khichuri during an annual urs festival. The tragic incident occurred on Wednesday morning, 17 December, in the Shreepur Union’s Shokher Bazar area, claiming the life of 60-year-old Ahmad Ali. Ali, a native of Noyon Sukh village and the son of Apil Munsi, was a respected homeopathic practitioner, known for his dedication to providing healthcare services to the local community.
Superintendent of Police Tajul Islam reported that the urs had been held the previous night, Tuesday, at Murshid’s Bazar. Devotees were served food, including khichuri, as part of the festival arrangements. After the event, a local man named Mun Mia brought a packet of khichuri to his shop and handed it to Ahmad Ali. The following morning, when Ahmad Ali approached Mun Mia regarding the khichuri, he complained that it was burnt and unsuitable for consumption. A verbal disagreement quickly escalated into a physical confrontation.
According to police sources, Mun Mia and his associates began assaulting Ahmad Ali with fists and kicks. He suffered severe injuries and was rushed to hospital by local residents. Sadly, attending doctors pronounced him dead on arrival.
SP Tajul Islam confirmed that Ahmad Ali’s body has been recovered and that preparations are being made to lodge a formal case at the local police station. He urged the public to remain calm and warned that all parties involved would face legal action.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the local community, creating widespread fear and prompting authorities to order a prompt investigation. Initial findings suggest that the clash was fuelled by tensions arising from food distribution during the festival, compounded by underlying personal disputes.
