A horrific act of domestic violence has shaken the quiet village of Goshaipur in Govindaganj Upazila, Gaibandha. A fifty-five-year-old woman, Dulali Begum, was stabbed to death, allegedly by her husband, Biraj Miah. In a tragic twist of fate, the suspect had previously been jailed for the murder of his mother-in-law nearly two decades ago, only to be bailed out by the very wife he is now accused of killing.
The fatal incident occurred on Monday afternoon within the jurisdiction of the Darbast Union. Local authorities officially confirmed the details on Tuesday morning. Swapan Kumar Sarkar, the Officer-in-Charge (Investigation) of Govindaganj Police Station, verified that the suspect is currently in police custody after an attempted escape was thwarted by alert neighbours.
Dulali Begum was the daughter of Dulu Miah, hailing from Chok Singhadanga village in the Talukkanupur Union. Her husband, Biraj Miah, is the son of Fayez Uddin from the Sadar Colony village in the Katabari Union. The couple had a fraught history, shadowed by a brutal crime committed nineteen years earlier. At that time, Biraj was arrested for the murder of Dulali’s mother. Despite the gravity of the crime, Dulali chose to secure his release, managing the legal procedures to grant him bail so they could resume their life together.
According to local residents, the reconciliation ended in bloodshed following a domestic dispute over a trivial household matter. The argument escalated rapidly, culminating in Biraj reportedly plunging a knife directly into his wife’s chest. The blow proved fatal, and Dulali died at the scene from severe trauma and blood loss before any medical assistance could be summoned.
Following the attack, Biraj fled the homestead and sought refuge in a nearby jute field, hoping to evade the authorities. However, alarmed by the commotion, local villagers launched a search operation. They surrounded the field on Monday evening, apprehended the suspect, and subsequently handed him over to the responding police officers.
Law enforcement officials have recovered the victim’s body, which has been transported to the local morgue for a post-mortem examination. Officer-in-Charge Swapan Kumar Sarkar stated that a formal murder case is being processed, and a thorough investigation into the background of the suspect’s violent history is underway.
