Mbappé’s Emotional Farewell to Deschamps

Kylian Mbappé has paid a heartfelt tribute to Didier Deschamps following the veteran coach’s final match in charge of the French national team, insisting that one disappointing result cannot diminish a legacy built over more than a decade.

France had hoped to give their long-serving manager a fitting send-off by defeating England in the FIFA World Cup third-place play-off. Instead, Les Bleus suffered a 6-4 defeat, leaving the players unable to deliver the farewell they had envisioned for the coach who guided the nation through one of its most successful periods in modern football.

Despite the disappointment, France captain Mbappé was quick to defend Deschamps’ remarkable record. Speaking after the match, he said the defeat should not overshadow everything the coach had achieved during his 14-year tenure.

“We couldn’t win the match,” Mbappé said. “We wanted to do something special for our coach. It’s heartbreaking because none of us wanted his final game to end like this. But this result does not tarnish Didier Deschamps’ legacy in the slightest.”

The French forward also reflected honestly on his team’s performance, admitting that France produced two very different displays across the two halves of the match. According to Mbappé, the opening period fell well below the standards expected of the national team, while the players responded with greater confidence and determination after the interval.

“The two halves were completely different,” he explained. “Looking at the first half, people could rightly say that we didn’t honour the shirt the way we should have. We are human, and sometimes things simply don’t go as expected. Even we struggled to understand what was happening. England forced us to wake up, and after the break we played much better. We became more confident and showed the quality we are capable of.”

Mbappé’s admiration for Deschamps had already been evident before kick-off. Ahead of the match against England, he posted an emotional message on social media thanking the coach for his years of service to French football.

“Today is your last dance,” he wrote. “We should have given you a better ending, but we couldn’t. It is difficult to find words for everything you have accomplished over the past 14 years. Your role in rebuilding this team has been extraordinary. People may not always have appreciated your greatness, but history certainly will.”

The France captain also expressed his personal gratitude for the opportunities Deschamps had given him throughout his international career.

“Thank you for allowing me to represent my country on football’s biggest stage for so many years,” Mbappé wrote. “It has been an honour to stand alongside one of the greatest legends our nation has produced. Everything we experienced together and everything we achieved will remain unforgettable memories. I wish you every success in the next chapter of your life. Thank you once again for everything you have done for this precious shirt.”

Deschamps took charge of the French national team in 2012 and leaves as one of the country’s most decorated managers. Under his leadership, France won the 2018 FIFA World Cup and reached the final again four years later. He also guided Les Bleus to the UEFA Euro 2016 final and another European Championship semi-final in 2024, while maintaining France’s position among the world’s elite footballing nations.

Widely regarded as the most successful coach in France’s history, Deschamps had announced well before the tournament that he would step down after the World Cup. Although his farewell ended in defeat, his achievements over 14 years have secured his place among the game’s most respected international managers, a point Mbappé believes history will continue to recognise.
