A three-month-old baby boy has tragically died in Mirpur’s Badhon Bari area under Darus Salam Police Station in Dhaka, in an incident that has been alleged to involve deliberate suffocation by his stepfather. The incident occurred in the early hours of Friday and has since triggered widespread shock, grief, and anger in the local community.
According to police and local accounts, the infant was sleeping beside his mother when he began crying during the early morning hours. The situation reportedly escalated when the stepfather, identified as Apurba, became agitated by the child’s crying. Witnesses claim he verbally threatened the child’s mother, demanding that she stop the baby from crying, allegedly warning of serious consequences if the noise continued.
Moments later, when the infant’s crying persisted, the accused is said to have suddenly covered the child’s mouth with force. The baby allegedly died at the scene due to suffocation. The mother’s screams alerted neighbours, who rushed to the house and intervened. They subsequently restrained the suspect before handing him over to the police.
Officers from Darus Salam Police Station confirmed that they recovered the infant’s body from the scene. The body was later sent to the morgue at Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital for post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death. Authorities stated that while initial findings suggest a highly violent incident, a full investigation is ongoing to establish the precise sequence of events.
Police further reported that the biological father of the deceased child is currently in prison in connection with a narcotics-related case. It has also emerged that the child’s mother, Rajiya Khatun, had married Apurba only a week prior to the incident. Following the tragedy, she filed a murder case against her husband at Darus Salam Police Station.
Residents of the area have described the household as previously experiencing domestic disputes, although many expressed disbelief that the situation could escalate into such a devastating outcome. The incident has left the neighbourhood in a state of mourning, with heightened tension and emotional distress among locals.
Investigators are now examining multiple aspects of the case, including the suspect’s mental condition, behavioural history, and the dynamics within the newly formed family. Police have stated that further details will emerge as the investigation progresses.
