In a disciplinary action that has drawn local attention, a mathematics teacher at Chatiani Rokeya Obedul Haque High School in Dhunot Upazila, Bogura, has been dismissed after allegations surfaced that she collected her salary while being largely absent from her workplace. The teacher, Afrina Rahman, reportedly used the attendance system to receive monthly wages despite only appearing in school once per month.
The controversy came to light following a detailed report published by the daily Kaler Kantho, which included photographic evidence and interviews highlighting the alleged misconduct. Following the report, Dhunot Upazila Executive Officer and Chair of the School Managing Committee, Pritilata Barman, confirmed the teacher’s dismissal on Tuesday, 3 March 2026. She stated:
“This matter was not previously known to us. After the Kaler Kantho report was published, the headteacher contacted Afrina Rahman. She subsequently submitted her resignation on 26 February, which has been accepted in accordance with the rules.”
School sources revealed that Afrina Rahman, daughter of Ataur Rahman of Bogura Sadar, was recommended for the position of Assistant Teacher (Mathematics) by the non-governmental teacher registration and certification authority (STRCA) on 20 September 2023. She officially joined Chatiani Rokeya Obedul Haque High School on 1 October 2023.
According to reports, Afrina Rahman would attend the school in person only once a month, signing the attendance register and then withdrawing her full monthly salary via electronic fund transfer (EFT) from the bank. This pattern continued until the issue was exposed by the media, leading to her resignation and subsequent official dismissal.

Dhunot Upazila authorities have indicated that measures will be taken to ensure stricter monitoring of teacher attendance and salary disbursement in the future. The incident highlights the importance of transparency in public service institutions and the role of media reporting in exposing irregularities.
Community members and education stakeholders are now calling for improved administrative checks to prevent similar incidents, ensuring that public funds intended for education are used appropriately and that students receive consistent access to qualified teachers.
