Dembele Plans World Cup Tribute for Deschamps

France forward Ousmane Dembele has stated that the squad is motivated to deliver a World Cup triumph as a farewell tribute to head coach Didier Deschamps, who has already confirmed that he will step down after the tournament.

Deschamps’ 14-year tenure in charge of the French national team is set to conclude following this World Cup. He took over from Laurent Blanc in 2012 and has since overseen one of the most successful periods in the country’s football history.

During his spell, Deschamps led France to the 2018 FIFA World Cup title and the 2021 UEFA Nations League crown. He also guided the team to the final of Euro 2016 and the 2022 World Cup, as well as the semi-finals of Euro 2024. His longevity places him among the longest-serving national team coaches in international football.

Speaking in an interview with ESPN on Saturday, Dembele said the announcement of Deschamps’ departure has not disrupted the squad’s focus. Instead, he described it as an added source of motivation for the team.

Dembele emphasised that the players are aware this will be Deschamps’ final tournament and expressed respect for the coach’s achievements and influence. He noted that France have previously competed in major tournaments under his leadership and remain proud to have worked with him.

The forward also stated that the squad aims to reach the final and conclude Deschamps’ tenure with a successful outcome, highlighting the coach’s consistent trust in the players and his role in motivating them after each match.

Dembele further acknowledged Deschamps’ importance in his own professional career, underlining the coach’s personal impact on his development as a player.

Despite France being considered among the contenders for the title, Dembele stressed that tournament football does not guarantee outcomes based on reputation alone. He noted that matches are decided on the pitch between two teams of eleven players, regardless of pre-tournament expectations.

France will begin their World Cup campaign on 16 June at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey against Senegal.
