At least two people were killed and eight others injured after a speeding covered van crashed into the rear of a gas-laden truck on a highway in Feni’s Sadar Upazila during the early hours of Thursday. The accident occurred at approximately 2:00 am near the Bhojon Bari Restaurant area in Khaiyara, triggering panic among local residents and travellers.
According to police, hospital authorities and local witnesses, the gas-loaded truck had been travelling from Chattogram when one of its tyres became punctured on the highway. The driver and his assistant subsequently pulled the vehicle to the roadside and began replacing the damaged tyre. During the repair work, several local residents gathered near the truck to observe the situation.
While the tyre replacement was underway, a Dhaka-bound covered van reportedly lost control and slammed into the rear of the stationary truck. The impact struck the group of people standing nearby, causing multiple casualties.
Local residents, assisted by officers from the Mahipal Highway Police Station, immediately launched rescue efforts. The injured were rushed to Feni General Hospital, where medical personnel began emergency treatment. Hospital officials said that one victim had died before reaching the facility, while another later succumbed to injuries while undergoing treatment.
Authorities have identified one of the deceased as Jahangir, 40. The identity of the second victim has not yet been confirmed. Police said efforts are continuing to establish the individual’s identity, with assistance from the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI).
Doctors at the emergency department of Feni General Hospital reported that at least ten injured individuals were brought to the hospital. Several suffered serious head, arm and leg injuries. Due to the severity of their conditions, five patients were transferred to Chattogram Medical College Hospital for specialised treatment.

Eyewitness Abul Kalam, whose restaurant is located near the crash site, said he heard a loud bang and rushed outside. He observed that a tyre-changing operation was underway beside the gas truck and that several people had gathered nearby. Moments later, the covered van approached from behind, lost control and ploughed directly into the crowd. According to his account, one person died at the scene while several others sustained severe injuries.
Officials from Fazilpur Highway Police Station confirmed that both the truck and the covered van involved in the collision have been seized and placed in police custody. Investigators are examining the circumstances surrounding the crash, including vehicle speed, driver actions and road conditions at the time of the incident.
Road safety experts have long warned that stationary vehicles on highways pose significant risks when adequate warning measures are absent. Excessive speed, driver inattention, insufficient lighting and poor visibility during late-night hours are frequently cited as contributing factors in major highway accidents across Bangladesh. Specialists recommend the use of reflective warning signs, hazard lights and properly marked safety zones around disabled vehicles to reduce the likelihood of secondary collisions.
The investigation remains ongoing, and law enforcement agencies are continuing efforts to determine the precise cause of the accident and take any necessary legal action.
