Police have filed a murder case against 11 named individuals, including a landlady, over the killing of 38-year-old Rajib Ahmed Rubel in Mymensingh city. The case also names three to four unidentified suspects believed to have been involved in the incident. As the investigation continues, two men who were initially detained for questioning have now been formally arrested, while law enforcement agencies are pursuing other suspects believed to have fled.
The case was lodged on Monday night at Kotwali Model Police Station by the victim’s father, Md Abdul Hamid. According to the first information report (FIR), the principal accused is the landlady, Parul Begum. The complaint alleges that several other individuals, including members of her family, participated in the fatal attack.
The FIR states that Rajib Ahmed Rubel had rented a house in the 36 Bari Colony area on RK Mission Road around 15 days before the incident and had been living there alone. Within days of moving in, disagreements reportedly developed between him and the landlady over various issues. The complaint alleges that he was subsequently pressured to vacate the property immediately. Although Rajib requested additional time to leave, the situation allegedly deteriorated. The FIR further claims that the landlady and her sons repeatedly intimidated him and issued threats to his life.
According to the complaint, another confrontation broke out between approximately 9:30 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. on Sunday over the dispute surrounding the tenancy. During the altercation, the landlady, her sons and the other accused allegedly entered Rajib’s room, restrained him and attacked him with a sharp weapon. The FIR alleges that he sustained repeated injuries to the neck and died at the scene. The accused are said to have fled immediately after the incident.
After receiving news of the killing, Rajib’s father rushed to the residence and found his son’s blood-soaked body lying on the bed inside the bedroom. The National Emergency Service 999 was then contacted, prompting police officers to arrive at the scene and secure the area.
Investigators from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) also visited the crime scene to assist with the investigation. After collecting forensic evidence and other exhibits, officers recovered the body and sent it to the Mymensingh Medical College Hospital morgue for a post-mortem examination. Police expect the autopsy findings to play a significant role in establishing the precise cause of death and supporting the ongoing investigation.
Soon after the incident, detectives detained two men identified as Rony and Sajal for questioning. On Monday night, they were handed over to Kotwali Model Police Station and formally shown as arrested in connection with the murder case. Police said they would be produced before the court after the completion of the necessary legal procedures.
The killing has caused widespread concern among local residents, many of whom have expressed shock that a dispute involving a rented residence could allegedly escalate into such a brutal act of violence. Investigators are also examining whether factors beyond the reported tenancy dispute may have contributed to the incident. Officials have indicated that all possible motives remain under scrutiny as the inquiry progresses.
Rajan Chandra Pal, the Investigation Officer of Kotwali Model Police Station, confirmed that the murder case names 11 accused individuals along with several unidentified suspects. He said the two detainees had been formally arrested and would be produced before the court, while operations to apprehend the remaining accused were continuing.
Police have emphasised that the investigation remains active. Officers are analysing forensic evidence, witness statements, physical exhibits and the forthcoming post-mortem report to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the killing. Authorities have stated that any further legal action will be taken on the basis of the evidence gathered during the investigation.
