Woman Killed in Mirpur College Wall Collapse

A woman was killed and seven others were injured after a boundary wall collapsed at Mirpur University College in the Bangladeshi capital while people were waiting to purchase subsidised goods distributed by the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB).

The fatal incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon (28 July) when a section of the college’s rear boundary wall suddenly gave way, trapping several people who had gathered outside the premises. The victims had reportedly been standing in a queue to collect TCB products, a government initiative that provides essential commodities at subsidised prices to eligible consumers.

The deceased was identified as Nasima Begum, a resident of Janata Housing in Mirpur-2. She sustained severe injuries after being crushed beneath the collapsing wall. Several other people were also injured in the incident and were rescued by local residents before being taken to different hospitals in the capital for medical treatment.

Confirming the incident, Mirpur Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Hafizur Rahman said that Nasima Begum had died following the collapse of the boundary wall at Mirpur University College. He added that seven other people had been injured and that the necessary legal procedures were underway.

Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic immediately after the collapse. One witness said a large number of people had been waiting in line to receive TCB goods when the wall suddenly crumbled without warning. People nearby rushed to help those trapped beneath the debris, pulling victims from the rubble before emergency responders arrived.

The witness recalled seeing several injured individuals, including a woman whose face had been severely crushed and whose leg appeared to be broken. She was later identified as Nasima Begum, who subsequently succumbed to her injuries.

The collapse disrupted the TCB distribution programme in the area and left local residents in shock. Authorities have not yet announced the cause of the structural failure, and no official findings have been released regarding the condition of the boundary wall before the incident.

Police said the incident is being handled in accordance with legal procedures, while the injured continue to receive treatment at various hospitals. The authorities are expected to examine the circumstances surrounding the collapse as part of the ongoing process.

The tragedy has once again drawn attention to the importance of maintaining ageing public infrastructure, particularly in locations where large crowds regularly gather.
