In a brazen assault on law enforcement, a suspect in Mymensingh was forcibly freed from police custody, leaving five officers injured. The incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon, 13 January, at around 4:00 pm near the Digar Kanda Fishery Junction in Mymensingh city.
The suspect, identified as Ariful Islam, was being escorted by police following his arrest in connection with a previous violent attack. During the transfer, a group led by Ariful’s father, Sagar Ali, launched a coordinated attack on the police team using sticks and makeshift weapons, ultimately seizing the suspect along with his handcuffs.
Five police personnel, including an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) and three constables, sustained injuries during the clash. All were immediately admitted to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, with one officer requiring hospitalisation for further treatment.
Background of the Case
According to Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Najmus Sakib of Kotwali Model Police Station, Ariful Islam and his associates had recently attacked a local man, Russel, leaving him seriously injured. Russel is currently undergoing treatment in Pangu Hospital, Dhaka, in critical condition. Following this incident, a formal case was filed at Kotwali Model Police Station.
On the day of the arrest, a five-member police team led by SI Farid Ahmed went to the Digar Kanda area to apprehend Ariful. It was then that the violent intervention occurred, orchestrated by Ariful’s father and his supporters. The police were overwhelmed and, despite their efforts, the suspect was rescued amid the melee.
The police have since detained Sagar Ali, the father of the suspect, and investigations are ongoing. OC Sakib emphasised the gravity of the incident, stating that attacking duty-bound officers and forcibly freeing a suspect is a serious offence that will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.
