A Dhaka court has ordered small-screen actor Niamat Ullah Bhuiyan, popularly known as Jaher Alvi, to be sent back to jail following the completion of his remand in a case involving the recovery of his wife’s hanging body from a residence in the Mirpur area of the capital.
The order was issued on Tuesday by Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Aminul Islam Junayed after police produced the actor before the court at the end of his custodial interrogation. Investigators informed the court that questioning during remand had yielded what they described as significant information relevant to the ongoing inquiry.
According to the prosecution, Alvi was questioned on multiple aspects of the case. Officials claimed that certain details obtained during interrogation could assist in advancing the investigation, although they stressed that the inquiry remains at an early and sensitive stage. The investigating officer sought continued detention, arguing that keeping the accused in custody was necessary until the investigation reaches its conclusion.
The defence did not submit any bail petition during the hearing, according to the lawyer representing the complainant. After reviewing the matter, the court directed that Alvi be sent to jail.
The case itself stems from an incident on 28 February this year, when the body of Afra Ibnat Ikra was recovered in an unconscious condition from a flat in the Pallabi DOHS area of Dhaka. She was taken to Kurmitola General Hospital, where doctors declared her dead upon arrival.
On the following day, her father, Kabir Hayat Khan, filed a case with Pallabi Police Station. The complaint alleges that prolonged family disputes and mental harassment contributed to circumstances that led to her death, which was initially treated as suicide. The allegations also include claims that Jaher Alvi made derogatory and provocative remarks about the victim through social media platforms.
Investigators have further examined accusations that the actor had circulated photographs involving another woman while still in a marital relationship, alongside other disputed statements shared publicly. Authorities say they are working to verify the full chain of events, identify any additional individuals involved, and determine whether external factors played a role in the incident.
Earlier, on 18 June, Alvi surrendered before the court in Dhaka and sought bail, which was rejected, resulting in his placement in custody. A remand request was later placed on 21 June for further interrogation. In contrast, his mother, Nasrin Sultana, who also surrendered before the court on 4 June in connection with the same case, was granted bail.
The investigation remains ongoing, with police expected to submit a detailed report once inquiries are completed and all relevant evidence has been assessed.
