Separate incidents of lightning strikes across the Sadar and Shailkupa upazilas of Jhenaidah district have resulted in the deaths of two individuals and left seven others injured. The tragic atmospheric events occurred concurrently on Monday afternoon, 18 May 2026, during a period of sudden and severe weather that affected multiple villages in the region, including Mayadharpur and Damukdia.
The deceased individuals have been formally identified by local authorities and medical personnel as 40-year-old Asadul Islam and 45-year-old Anna Khatun. Asadul Islam, a resident of Nofarkandi village located within the Mirpur upazila of neighbouring Kushtia district, was working in Jhenaidah as a seasonal agricultural day labourer. Anna Khatun, the second casualty of the afternoon storm, was the wife of Anisur Rahman and a permanent resident of Damukdia village within the Shailkupa upazila.
Fatalities During Fieldwork and Gathering Activities
According to local administrative accounts and witnesses, Asadul Islam had been engaged in harvesting paddy in the agricultural fields of Mayadharpur village in Jhenaidah Sadar upazila. When the weather deteriorated sharply in the afternoon, bringing heavy rain and high winds, he stopped his work and attempted to return to a secure shelter from the open field. While he was en route, a high-voltage lightning strike directly struck the area, leaving him catastrophically injured. Local residents rushed to the site, extracted the unconscious labourer from the field, and transported him to Jhenaidah Sadar Hospital. Upon arrival, the emergency medical officer on duty conducted an examination and officially pronounced him dead.
Simultaneously, in Shailkupa upazila, the storm prompted Anna Khatun to leave her home to gather fallen green mangoes from an orchard located adjacent to her family residence in Damukdia village. While she was inside the orchard, a localised lightning strike descended upon the area. The discharge inflicted fatal injuries, causing her to perish at the scene before medical assistance could be organised by her family or neighbours.
Casualties Spread Across Upazilas and Hospitalisation Details
Beyond the two fatalities, the electrical storm caused significant casualties across other sectors of the district. A total of seven additional individuals, including several women, sustained varying degrees of burn and blast injuries from separate lightning discharges in the Narikelbaria area of Sadar upazila and different blocks of Shailkupa upazila.
Emergency response teams and local villagers organised the evacuation of the injured parties, securing their admission into Jhenaidah Sadar Hospital and the Shailkupa Upazila Health Complex for immediate medical stabilisation and clinical monitoring.
Hospital sources confirmed that while the majority of the admitted patients are currently in stable condition, one of the victims suffered critical trauma. Selina Begum, a resident of Raghunathpur village within Shailkupa upazila, exhibited a sharp deterioration in her physiological parameters following admission to the upazila health facility. Recognising the severity of her internal injuries and specialised clinical requirements, the attending physicians officially referred her to the Faridpur Medical College Hospital for advanced tertiary care and intensive therapeutic intervention. Local administrative officials have stated that they are keeping a record of the incidents to process standard government ex-gratia support for the affected families.
