Monkey Attacks Prompt Urgent Appeal

Residents of Ward No. 2 in Natore Municipality have submitted a written appeal to the Deputy Commissioner seeking protection from repeated attacks by a monkey in the Lalbazar neighbourhood. On Thursday (4 June) afternoon, Milon Akhand submitted the application on behalf of more than one hundred residents of the area to the office of the Deputy Commissioner.

According to the application, a “wild” monkey arrived in the area from another locality approximately three months ago and has since taken up residence in the neighbourhood. Residents stated that the animal moves around the locality from early morning until evening. It reportedly enters kitchens, dining tables, hotels, and various shops, taking food items and also attacking residents. Due to these incidents, local people have been forced to keep their doors closed at all times for safety.

The application further states that at least 32 people have been injured in attacks by the monkey over the past three months. Among them, at least 15 individuals have reportedly received vaccinations following the incidents.

One of the affected residents, Kakoli Rani (32), said that around two months ago she was standing outside a shop when the monkey suddenly leapt and bit her hand. She stated that a tendon in one of her fingers was severed as a result of the attack, requiring surgical intervention. She added that she has not yet fully recovered.

At Natore Sadar Hospital, staff nurse Parvin Akhter, who is responsible for the vaccination unit, stated that patients affected by monkey attacks have been arriving periodically. She confirmed that 15 people have received vaccinations at the hospital over the past three months, while others have taken vaccines from external healthcare facilities.

Forest Department inspector Jahangir Alam from the Rajshahi office said that the monkey has displayed abnormal behaviour and repeated attempts to capture it have been unsuccessful. He added that alternative measures are now being considered.

Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Abul Hayat stated that the written complaint from the residents has been received and that steps will be taken in consultation with the Forest Department.
