Ounahi Brace Powers Morocco Into Quarter-finals

Morocco secured a place in the FIFA World Cup quarter-finals with a convincing 3-0 victory over co-hosts Canada, producing a clinical second-half performance after weathering sustained pressure during a tightly contested opening 45 minutes.

The Atlas Lions struggled to impose themselves before the break as Canada matched them in intensity and created the clearer opportunities. However, Morocco emerged transformed after half-time, with midfielder Azzedine Ounahi scoring twice before substitute Soufiane Rahimi sealed an impressive victory in stoppage time.

The result sends Morocco into the last eight and strengthens their credentials as one of the tournament’s most formidable teams.

Morocco attempted to establish control from the opening whistle by dominating possession, but Canada gradually settled into the contest after the first five minutes. Backed by home support, the co-hosts pressed aggressively and disrupted Morocco’s rhythm, forcing several mistakes in midfield and defence.

Canada’s best chance of the first half came in the 11th minute following a defensive error. Ahmed capitalised on the mistake and supplied Tani Oluwaseyi, whose low strike looked destined for the bottom corner. Morocco goalkeeper Yassine Bounou produced an outstanding reflex save, stretching out a leg to divert the effort away and preserve the deadlock.

Despite enjoying periods of possession, both sides found it difficult to create clear-cut openings for the remainder of the first half. Midfield battles dominated proceedings, while disciplined defending and compact formations prevented either attack from finding sustained momentum. As a result, the teams went into the interval level at 0-0.

Morocco returned for the second half with noticeably greater purpose and intensity.

Their breakthrough came in the 50th minute from a cleverly rehearsed free-kick routine. Captain Achraf Hakimi opted against delivering the ball directly into the penalty area, instead picking out Azzedine Ounahi just outside the box. The midfielder took control before driving a powerful low shot beyond the Canadian goalkeeper to give Morocco a deserved lead.

The opening goal shifted the momentum entirely.

Forced to chase the game, Canada pushed more players into attack, leaving spaces for Morocco to exploit on the counter. The North African side looked increasingly dangerous with every attack, combining quick passing with intelligent movement to stretch the Canadian defence.

Their dominance was rewarded again in the 82nd minute. Brahim Díaz threaded a perfectly weighted pass into the penalty area, where Ounahi calmly applied the finish to score his second goal of the evening and effectively end Canada’s hopes of mounting a comeback.

Canada continued to search for a consolation goal but found little joy against Morocco’s organised defence. The result was put beyond any doubt deep into stoppage time when Soufiane Rahimi completed a flowing attacking move with a composed finish, wrapping up a comprehensive 3-0 victory.

While the final score suggested a one-sided contest, the match was far more evenly balanced during the opening half. Canada competed confidently, pressed effectively and created the best early opportunity, but failed to make their superiority count when it mattered most.

Morocco, by contrast, demonstrated the qualities that have carried them deep into the tournament. Defensive resilience, tactical discipline and ruthless finishing proved decisive once again, allowing them to punish their opponents after the interval.

Ounahi emerged as the undisputed star of the match, delivering a superb all-round midfield performance capped by two well-taken goals. Hakimi’s intelligence from set-pieces, Díaz’s creative influence and Bounou’s crucial first-half save also played vital roles in Morocco’s success.

For Canada, the defeat marks the end of an encouraging World Cup campaign. The co-hosts earned praise for their commitment, attacking ambition and spirited performances throughout the tournament, but their inability to convert promising opportunities ultimately proved costly against a clinical Moroccan side.

Morocco, meanwhile, advance to the quarter-finals full of confidence and momentum. Having combined defensive solidity with increasingly fluent attacking football, they will enter the next stage believing they have the quality and composure to challenge any opponent as their pursuit of World Cup glory continues.
