Twenty-Four Arrested Following Assault On Savar Police

Savar Modelfile Police have arrested a total of 24 individuals, including five primary suspects named in a First Information Report (FIR), following an assault on police officers. The remaining detainees face separate charges, including murder, narcotics offences, theft, attempted murder, and outstanding judicial arrest warrants.

Operations and Official Confirmation

The arrests were officially confirmed on Thursday morning, 11 June, by Noor Mohammad, the Inspector (Investigation) of Savar Model Police Station. The law enforcement operation commenced on Wednesday afternoon and concluded on Thursday dawn, focusing primarily on the Savar Bede Para neighbourhood and its surrounding sectors.

Context of the Assault on Personnel

According to police and local sources, the incident originated on the evening of 9 June. Acting on a covert tip-off, a police detachment from Savar Model Police Station initiated an operation to apprehend a wanted fugitive and identified narcotics trader, Mohammad Rafiqul Islam, 28. Islam, the son of Mohammad Abdur Rahim, is a resident of the Pora Bari area within Ward 1 of the Savar Municipality.

At approximately 19:40 BST, police personnel intercepted and attempted to detain Islam near the Boktarpur Balur Math area. Upon being apprehended, Islam shouted to summon his associates, resulting in a crowd of over 50 individuals assembling at the scene. Islam and his accomplices actively obstructed the police operation and destabilised the local environment.

Despite the officers disclosing their official identities and attempting to pacify the crowd, the assembly grew violent. Islam and his associates assaulted Sub-Inspector (SI) SM Shamim and Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Mashiur Rahman using sticks, iron rods, and domestic weapons.

When the two officers were incapacitated and fell to the ground, the assailants continued their physical assault. They issued threats, warning law enforcement against attempting future arrests within the locality. The attackers dispersed only after additional police reinforcements arrived at the scene. The injured officers were subsequently evacuated and admitted to Savar Enam Medical College Hospital for treatment.
