Two killed in Bahubal clashes between two villages over dispute

The death toll in a clash between residents of two villages in Bahubal upazila of Habiganj has risen to two, following two separate rounds of violent confrontation over a long-standing dispute. At least 40 people were injured in the incidents and have been admitted to various hospitals for treatment.

According to police and local sources, the clashes took place on Monday (15 June) in two phases during the afternoon and evening in Adityapur, Arishpur, and Abdafaujda villages under Satkapan Union of the upazila.

The deceased have been identified as Selu Mia (53), son of the late Firoz Mia of Adityapur village, and Helal Mia (37) from the same village.

Local reports indicate that the dispute centred on a road located beside a graveyard situated between the two villages, which had remained unresolved for a long period. Tensions escalated over this issue, leading to violence.

The first round of clashes occurred around 1:30 pm on Monday between supporters of Mosahid Member’s group from Arishpur, Abdafaujda and Kasergাঁও villages and the opposing groups of Nasir and Aktar from Adityapur village. During the confrontation, both sides reportedly used local weapons, spears, machetes, sticks, and bricks.

Police from Bahubal Police Station later arrived at the scene and brought the situation under control. Authorities also attempted to resolve the dispute through arbitration (salish) around 8:00 pm.

However, a second round of clashes broke out at Dubai Bazar area around 6:30 pm the same day. This time, the violence intensified further, with the use of sharp weapons, resulting in a more serious escalation.

Selu Mia sustained critical injuries during the clashes and was taken to Bahubal Upazila Health Complex, where on-duty doctors declared him dead. Later, Helal Mia died at around 11:00 pm while being taken to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital in critical condition.
