The Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) is facing a significant financial impasse in its quest to appoint a new head coach for the national team. Despite an earlier announcement by BFF President Tabith Awal that the new coach would be named by 15 May, the federation has hit a logistical stalemate. The primary obstacle remains a substantial budgetary deficit required to meet the salary demands of high-profile candidates.
Financial Deadlock in National Committee Meeting
During an emergency online meeting of the BFF National Team Committee held recently, officials failed to finalise a candidate. The federation’s leadership has confirmed that the decision is now contingent upon further negotiations with the government. BFF President Tabith Awal is scheduled to hold a decisive meeting with the State Minister for Youth and Sports, Aminul Haque, following the minister’s return to Dhaka from Turkey on Thursday morning.
While the State Minister previously offered assurances of support to the BFF, the specific extent of government funding remains unconfirmed. Efforts to reach the minister for comment regarding the exact allocation have so far been unsuccessful.
Salary Discrepancies and Candidate Profiles
The federation’s primary target is reportedly the former Wales national team manager, Chris Coleman. However, the financial requirements for his appointment significantly exceed the BFF’s internal budget. Coleman has requested a monthly salary of $35,000 for himself and an assistant. In contrast, the BFF’s independent spending capacity is capped between $15,000 and $20,000.
Should the Ministry of Youth and Sports decline to bridge this $15,000–$20,000 monthly gap, the BFF may be forced to pivot to alternative candidates with lower financial expectations.
Potential Candidates for the Head Coach Position:
| Candidate | Nationality | Notable Experience | Status |
| Chris Coleman | Wales | Managed Wales to Euro 2016 Semi-finals | Primary Choice |
| Bernd Storck | Germany | Former Hungary National Team Manager | On Shortlist |
| Rogério Micale | Brazil | Managed Brazil to Olympic Gold (2016) | Under Discussion |
Strategic Concerns and Infrastructure Challenges
The necessity of a high-salaried coach is being questioned within the committee due to the uncertain international schedule. The South Asian Football Federation (SAFF) Championship, originally slated for September, is expected to be postponed to November or December, with the possibility of being cancelled entirely for the current year. Committee members have raised concerns regarding the return on investment if the national team lacks competitive fixtures.
Furthermore, the committee addressed systemic issues within Bangladeshi football. It was noted that a high-profile coach alone cannot transform the national side without significant improvements to domestic league standards and infrastructure. The derelict condition of district-level pitches remains a primary concern, as world-class coaches are unlikely to commit to long-term projects if the underlying facilities do not meet international standards.
The BFF President is expected to present a shortlist of three names to the State Minister. However, without a confirmed financial guarantee from the ministry, the appointment of a “high-profile” coach remains highly improbable.
