Lightning Strike Kills Labourer in Dinajpur Paddy Field

A sudden lightning strike has claimed the life of a 32-year-old day labourer and left two other men injured in the Ghoraghat upazila of Dinajpur district. The tragic incident occurred at around 12:00 pm on Monday in the Haripur area, located within Ward 4 of the Bulakipur union. The casualties were caught completely out in the open whilst preparing agricultural land for the upcoming cropping season.

The deceased worker has been identified as Mohammad Kamrul, a resident of Balgari Chandidaspur village within the Bulakipur union and the son of Dildar Rahman. Those injured alongside him include the landowner, 35-year-old Golzar, son of Haidar Ali, and another day labourer, 30-year-old Nurnabi, son of Insan Ali. Both of the survivors belong to the same local area and were working in close proximity to Kamrul when the electrical discharge struck the field.

Local community sources stated that intermittent rain had been falling across the region since Monday morning. Despite the inclement weather, Kamrul, Golzar, and Nurnabi had continued their strenuous manual work to prepare the paddy field. As they laboured, a powerful bolt of lightning hit the waterlogged ground, killing Kamrul instantly on the spot. The force of the strike simultaneously knocked down and injured his two companions.

Following the event, nearby villagers and fellow farmers rushed to the scene to assist the victims. They quickly evacuated the two injured men back to their homes, where local medical practitioners administered emergency treatment. Family sources have since confirmed that both Golzar and Nurnabi are out of danger and are currently recovering from shock and minor injuries sustained during the blast.

Upon receiving information about the fatality, a team of officers from the local police station visited the village to inspect the scene and speak with the bereaved family. The sudden death of the young labourer has cast a deep shroud of mourning over the tight-knit rural community.

Shahidul Islam, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Ghoraghat Police Station, confirmed the details of the tragedy to reporters. He stated that the police had been dispatched to the locality immediately after the incident was reported to verify the facts. The police chief added that necessary legal procedures, including the filing of an unnatural death case, are currently underway as the authorities wrap up their initial investigation.
