Taijul Surpasses Shakib to Claim Historic Test Bowling Records

The opening innings of the Test match in Harare proved to be a thoroughly disappointing affair for Bangladesh. After a dismal batting display saw the tourists bundled out for a meagre 140 runs, the pace attack also failed to exploit a green, seam-friendly surface. Yet, amid the collective gloom, veteran left-arm spinner Taijul Islam produced a masterclass in defensive and attacking spin bowling. Defying a pitch tailored heavily for fast bowlers, Taijul claimed magnificent figures of 7 for 138, systematically rewriting Bangladesh’s Test cricket history books.

With his latest haul against Zimbabwe, Taijul has surpassed legendary all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan to become the Bangladeshi bowler with the most five-wicket hauls on foreign soil. This performance marks his sixth five-wicket haul away from home, breaking a long-standing tie with Shakib, who achieved the feat five times during his career. Former spinner Mohammad Rafique and current all-rounder Mehidy Hasan Miraz sit joint-third on this specific list, having taken three five-wicket hauls each in overseas conditions.

Taijul’s brilliance in Harare also secured him the record for the best individual bowling figures by a Bangladeshi player in an overseas Test match. His returns of 7 for 138 eclipsed the previous benchmark held by Shakib Al Hasan, who captured 6 for 33 against the West Indies. Fast bowler Ebadot Hossain drops to third place on that overseas leaderboard, remembered for his match-winning spell of 6 for 46 against New Zealand during the famous Mount Maunganui Test victory.

Furthermore, Taijul has now achieved the rare distinction of taking seven wickets in a single Test innings on three separate occasions. No other Bangladeshi bowler has managed to reach this milestone more than once. Enamul Haque Junior, Shakib Al Hasan, and Mehidy Hasan Miraz have each managed a seven-wicket haul only once in their respective careers.

In terms of overall career statistics, this stellar performance has elevated Taijul to the very pinnacle of Bangladesh’s domestic records. He now stands neck-and-neck with Shakib Al Hasan for the highest number of five-wicket hauls in national Test history, with both players sitting on 19 apiece. Crucially, Taijul reached this monumental landmark in significantly fewer games, achieving it in just 107 innings compared to the 121 innings required by Shakib. Mehidy Hasan Miraz trails behind in third place overall with 14 five-wicket hauls to his name.

Whilst top-order batting failures and an uninspired performance from the seamers have left Bangladesh trailing significantly in Harare, Taijul’s resilience underscores his status as one of the country’s most dependable match-winners. His ability to extract spin, maintain strict line and length, and deceive batsmen in entirely unfavourable conditions highlights a world-class operator at the peak of his powers.
