Storm Warning Issued for Eleven Districts

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department has issued a warning forecasting thunderstorms accompanied by squally winds across eleven districts of the country by this evening. According to the latest update, wind speeds may reach up to 60 kilometres per hour, bringing the likelihood of moderate to heavy rainfall, lightning activity, and short-lived but intense storm conditions.

The warning remains valid from approximately 11:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. today, during which inland river ports have been advised to hoist Local Cautionary Signal No. 1. This indicates that weather conditions are likely to become temporarily unstable, with the possibility of sudden gusty winds and thundery showers, though not at a severe cyclonic level.

Meteorologists attribute the current instability to an active monsoon flow combined with locally developed low-pressure conditions over the region. Such atmospheric setups commonly increase the risk of convective thunderstorms during this period of the year, particularly when daytime heating creates sharp temperature contrasts.

Boat operators and river transport services have therefore been advised to exercise heightened caution and, where necessary, remain close to riverbanks until conditions improve.

Experts further cautioned that lightning strikes remain a significant hazard during such weather events. People are strongly advised to avoid open fields, refrain from sheltering under trees, and keep away from metal structures or objects during thunderstorms. These simple precautions are considered vital in reducing the risk of lightning-related accidents.
